High court upholds Obamacare health insurance mandate ...

In direct contrast to what was happening outside the courthouse, where media outlets were rushing to report the court?s decision regarding Obama?s health insurance mandate, the crowd inside the courthouse waited on tenterhooks, completely silent as Chief Justice John Roberts read the court?s decision.

Roberts did not make the winning side immediately clear when reading, so for an intense moment, both sides thought they had won.? Solicitor General Donald Verilli Jr., who has been largely criticized for his argument representing the government?s case, sat quietly and showed no emotion as the verdict was read.? After the chief justice finished explaining the courts had decided to uphold the requirement for individual insurance, everyone seemed to exhale at once.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was expected to be the swing vote upon which the eventual verdict would rest, ended up on the losing side and was visibly angry while reading his dissent, calling the majority vote a ?vast judicial overreaching?.

During the case, a broccoli analogy had been used by Justice Antonin Scalia, expressing that if people can be forced by the government to buy insurance, it can force them to buy anything; for example, broccoli.? This got laughs when it was referred to by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but she eventually made clear that she understood the argument being made, but disagreed with the implications because health care is not like vegetables; it is something that everyone will eventually need, some sooner and some later but it is impossible to tell when or how serious the need will be.

Using customer feedback to give location-specific, actionable insight ...

By Ashish Gambhir, co-founder, newBrandAnalytics

Co-Found of newBrandAnalytics

Online restaurant reviews have been skyrocketing in their popularity and influence and there is no slow-down in sight. An estimated 129 million consumers are talking about restaurants on social networks daily and that number is expected to swell to 220 million by 2015.

With social media providing a ready platform for one?s voice to be heard, diners are jumping online to share their opinions and evaluate their experiences. And their peers are listening. It is estimated that 82 percent of customers will use their smartphone to read online content when finding and selecting a restaurants in 2013. And, they?re flocking to sites such as Yelp, UrbanSpoon, Facebook, and Twitter to tap into the wisdom of the crowd to help them make their dining choices.

Despite the concerns regarding content credibility, most in the industry agree the better experience you provide, the better your rating and online reputation on these sites. Just as important, the better your online reputation, the more revenue you generate.

Gleaning location-specific insight from these online conversations is the key to driving the coveted positive reviews. By reading and understanding credible mentions online and translating it into location-specific data, restaurant executives can listen to and understand the real issues that impact the local customer experience and earn their continuous loyalty.

For instance, during a monthly review of their comment dashboard, a midscale restaurant?s management team member identified a negative trend in comments about the Chicken Caesar Salad at a particular location. Filtering the data by day part, they determined that most of the negative commentary attributed to the salad was during lunch service. Management retrained the lunch shift responsible for Chicken Caesar Salad food prep and effectively addressed the root source of the guest satisfaction issue: too much dressing. Negative commentary about the salad declined post retraining, positive elements of the dish shined, and unit sales increased over the month after the operational change.

Another restaurant group was able to glean similar operational insight. Reviewing the dashboards, management found a critical mass of mentions online warning potential guests that the restaurant had a slippery floor, particularly for women wearing heels. When drilling into the themes in feedback, management found that the issue was focused to one?specific?part of the restaurant: a high traffic area, on a turn from the restrooms, close to the food and beverage service area, and where airborne grease likely travels. The fix was simple enough: The restaurant now uses a longer mat in that area for an incremental charge of $5/week (they were already renting a mat in front of the area, but was not big enough to cover this area per customer feedback), and they also added this portion of the restaurant as part of a regular management inspection. Since making these slight changes, there have been no more mentions online about the floor being slippery ? thereby avoiding potential guest?embarrassment as well as slip and fall legal issues.

As these examples illustrate, listening to customer conversations and gleaning location-specific operational insight from this feedback enables restaurant organizations to ensure they are delivering a quality customer experience at each and every outlet. With consumers increasingly hopping on their smart phones to geo-locate and evaluate restaurants, arming yourself with location-specific intelligence has never been more important.

Researchers partially automate CPU core design, aim to fast track new PC processor production

NC State researchers automate CPU core design, potentially put new PC processors on the production fast trackTired of the year wait (or more) in between new silicon architecture offerings from Chipzilla and AMD? Well, if some Wolfpack researchers have anything to say about it, we'll measure that wait in months thanks to a new CPU core design tool that automates part of the process. Creating a new CPU core is, on a high level, a two step procedure. First, the architectural specification is created, which sets the core's dimensions and arranges its components. That requires some heavy intellectual lifting, and involves teams of engineers to complete. Previously, similar manpower was needed for the second step, where the architecture spec is translated into an implementation design that can be fabricated in a factory. No longer. The aforementioned NC State boffins have come up with a tool that allows engineers to input their architecture specification, and it generates an implementation design that's used to draw up manufacturing blueprints. The result? Considerable time and manpower savings in creating newly designed CPU cores, which means that all those leaked roadmaps we're so fond of could be in serious need of revision sometime soon.

New deglaciation data opens door for earlier First Americans migration

Friday, June 22, 2012

A new study of lake sediment cores from Sanak Island in the western Gulf of Alaska suggests that deglaciation there from the last Ice Age took place as much as1,500 to 2,000 years earlier than previously thought, opening the door for earlier coastal migration models for the Americas.

The Sanak Island Biocomplexity Project, funded by the National Science Foundation, also concluded that the maximum thickness of the ice sheet in the Sanak Island region during the last glacial maximum was 70 meters ? or about half that previously projected ? suggesting that deglaciation could have happened more rapidly than earlier models predicted.

Results of the study were just published in the professional journal, Quaternary Science Reviews.

The study, led by Nicole Misarti of Oregon State University, is important because it suggests that the possible coastal migration of people from Asia into North America and South America ? popularly known as "First Americans" studies ? could have begun as much as two millennia earlier than the generally accepted date of ice retreat in this area, which was 15,000 years before present.

Well-established archaeology sites at Monte Verde, Chile, and Huaca Prieta, Peru, date back 14,000 to 14,200 years ago, giving little time for expansion if humans had not come to the Americas until 15,000 years before present ? as many models suggest.

The massive ice sheets that covered this part of the Earth during the last Ice Age would have prevented widespread migration into the Americas, most archaeologists believe.

"It is important to note that we did not find any archaeological evidence documenting earlier entrance into the continent," said Misarti, a post-doctoral researcher in Oregon State's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. "But we did collect cores from widespread places on the island and determined the lake's age of origin based on 22 radiocarbon dates that clearly document that the retreat of the Alaska Peninsula Glacier Complex was earlier than previously thought."

"Glaciers would have retreated sufficiently so as to not hinder the movement of humans along the southern edge of the Bering land bridge as early as almost 17,000 years ago," added Misarti, who recently accepted a faculty position at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.

Interestingly, the study began as a way to examine the abundance of ancient salmon runs in the region. As the researchers began examining core samples from Sanak Island lakes looking for evidence of salmon remains, however, they began getting radiocarbon dates much earlier than they had expected. These dates were based on the organic material in the sediments, which was from terrestrial plant macrofossils indicating the region was ice-free earlier than believed.

The researchers were surprised to find the lakes ranged in age from 16,500 to 17,000 years ago.

A third factor influencing the find came from pollen, Misarti said.

"We found a full contingent of pollen that indicated dry tundra vegetation by 16,300 years ago," she said. "That would have been a viable landscape for people to survive on, or move through. It wasn't just bare ice and rock."

The Sanak Island site is remote, about 700 miles from Anchorage, Alaska, and about 40 miles from the coast of the western Alaska Peninsula, where the ice sheets may have been thicker and longer lasting, Misarti pointed out. "The region wasn't one big glacial complex," she said. "The ice was thinner and the glaciers retreated earlier."

Other studies have shown that warmer sea surface temperatures may have preceded the early retreat of the Alaska Peninsula Glacier Complex (APGC), which may have supported productive coastal ecosystems.

Wrote the researchers in their article: "While not proving that first Americans migrated along this corridor, these latest data from Sanak Island show that human migration across this portion of the coastal landscape was unimpeded by the APGC after 17 (thousand years before present), with a viable terrestrial landscape in place by 16.3 (thousand years before present), well before the earliest accepted sites in the Americas were inhabited."

At least $275K raised for bullied NY bus monitor

A video of a 68-year-old school bus monitor mercilessly taunted by seventh graders became an international online rallying point against bullies Thursday, with a fund for the Rochester, N.Y., grandmother raising at least $275,000 and a deluge of people demanding harsh punishment for the boys.

Police said Karen Klein does not want her young tormenters to face criminal charges, partly because of the storm of criticism leveled at the boys from the Rochester suburb of Greece after the video went viral.

"They've received death threats," Greece Police Capt. Steve Chatterton said Thursday. "Their families have been threatened. We have custody of one of their cellphones, and he had over 1,000 missed calls and 1,000 text messages threatening him. And he's 13 years old. That must stop."

The verbal abuse was captured in a 10-minute cellphone video recorded Monday by a student of Athena Middle School in suburban Rochester and later posted to YouTube. The video shows Klein trying her best to ignore the stream of profanity, insults and outright threats directed at her. One student taunted: "You don't have a family because they all killed themselves because they don't want to be near you."

Klein's oldest son killed himself 10 years ago.

Eventually, she appears to break down in tears.

"You want to jump into that bus and you want to grab those kids and say 'Knock it off!' And you want to hold her," said Amy Weber, a 43-year-old independent filmmaker from the Detroit area who pledged $100 Thursday through the international crowd-funding site Indiegogo.com.

"I think we hear about bullying every day and we become a little desensitized to it. This puts it in our face," said Weber, who is making a feature film about a bully.

Klein told NBC's "Today" show Thursday that it took "a lot of willpower" not to respond to the jeers from the four boys riding the bus operated by the Greece Central School District. Klein said she was "amazed" at the support she received.

"I've got these nice letters, emails, Facebook messages," she said. "It's like, wow, there's a whole world out there that I didn't know. It's really awesome."

She said she hopes the parents will talk to their children about being "a little more respectful."

Klein did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment.

The video logged more than 2 million views by Thursday afternoon, breaking hearts and raising passions of people who recalled bullying incidents in their own pasts. The fundraiser set up on Indiegogo.com shattered its goal of raising $5,000 to send the grandmother of eight on a "vacation of a lifetime." More than 12,000 people donated, many in denominations of $20 or less.

"I don't see how anyone can watch that and not be touched by it. It made me realize ? and I posted on my Facebook wall ? that sticks and stones may break my bones but words will still hurt you no matter how old you are," said Deana Rock, a 42-year-old marketing professional from Williston, Vt., who pledged $30.

Rock said she was moved to tears by the video and donated the money so Klein would not have to get back on the bus.

Police in the suburb of Greece had to step up patrols near the houses of the four boys and said they had received several threatening hoax calls from people. The boys had not yet apologized to Klein as of Thursday afternoon, though police said they regretted their acts and their parents are cooperating.

The district apologized to Klein and will discipline all four students.

The swell of support for Klein follows a recent surge in awareness of bullying that has brought the issue from the classroom to the stage and screen to the White House.

In September, after 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer of suburban Buffalo killed himself after complaining about being bullied about his sexuality, pop singer Lady Gaga decried the loss of another life to bullying, tweeting to millions of followers that she'd take her concerns to President Barack Obama.

This year, the White House held a conference on bullying prevention, estimating that it affects 13 million students, or about a third of those attending school. Obama said he hoped to "dispel the myth that bullying is just a harmless rite of passage or an inevitable part of growing up."

In April, the documentary film "Bully" examined the problem by following five kids over the course of a school year.

Whatever euro's fate, Europe's reputation savaged

LONDON (Reuters) - Whether the euro lives or dies, the chaotic way Europe has tackled the crisis could undermine the region's geopolitical clout for years to come and leave it at a distinct disadvantage in a rapidly changing world.

With an apparently never-ending series of last-minute summits and telephone calls, Europe's leaders and finance ministers have held the bloc together in the face of growing strains between states, a rising political backlash and market alarm.

But with hindsight, outsiders say each measure proved too little, too late. US officials in particular complain European leaders have either failed to grasp the scale of the problem or proved unwilling to countenance the awkward political decisions necessary to fix it.

As a result, they say, what should have been one of the most stable parts of the world has now become one of the most unpredictable.

At one extreme, the euro area might be about to embark on a journey towards further fiscal and political union as an almost totally unitary "super state". At the other, it could unravel and collapse into an unstable mess of regional rivalry.

"From almost every conversation I've had in the last year - with Chinese, with Indians, with just about anybody - the message is always the same," says Fiona Hill, a former senior officer for the US National Intelligence Council and now head of the Europe programme at Washington think tank the Brookings Institute. "Europe can no longer be trusted. It seems to be moving from being a source of stability to a driver of instability"

Long-held certainties were being challenged, she said. Even non-euro member Britain suddenly appeared at risk of breaking up, with Scotland due to hold a referendum on independence that experts say could yet go either way.

The slow burning euro zone debt and banking crisis is accelerating. Last weekend brought a decision by euro zone political leaders to bail out Spain's banks. This weekend Greece holds a parliamentary election which many observers fear could spell the end of its euro membership.

Some argue it is too soon to write Europe - or the EU institutions - off altogether. Under foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, some credit Europe with making real progress in talks with Iran and other powers over the future of its disputed nuclear programme. But their energy for anything beyond their immediate problems is seen decidedly limited.

"The Europeans are completely consumed with a battle to save the euro zone," says Ian Bremmer, president of political risk consultancy Eurasia Group. "It's a deep and ongoing crisis bigger than any they've experienced in decades... it's an environment where European leaders could hardly be expected to prioritise anything else."

That could leave the continent being increasingly sidelined as emerging powers - not just the BRIC powers of Brazil, Russia, India and China but other states such as Turkey, Indonesia and South Africa - grow in importance.

At the very least, it could undermine the ability of the continent's leaders to persuade the rest of the world to take them seriously on a range of issues, from trade to the importance of democracy and human rights.

"Europe probably isn't going to stop preaching to the rest of the world," says Nikolas Gvosdev, professor of national security studies at the US Naval War College. "But it's much less likely that others are going to be inclined to listen."

EUROPE AT CROSSROADS

At the Copenhagen climate summit in 2009, European states suffered the indignity of being outside the room when the final deal was struck between the United States and emerging powers. In the aftermath of the euro zone crisis, it's a position European leaders may simply have to get used to.

But for the rest of the world, it's not just the continent itself that is rapidly losing its shine. The whole European political model - generous welfare systems, democratic decision-making, closer regional integration and the idea of a currency union as a stabilising factor - no longer seems nearly as appealing to other, still growing regions.

"Europe is at a crossroads, with the very future of the EU at stake," says Brahma Chellaney, professor of strategic studies at New Delhi think tank the Centre for Policy Research. "If the euro dies, it will mark the end of the European experiment in forging closer financial and political integration. But it will also have wider international implications."

Not everyone agrees what those will be, however. Chellaney argues the demise of the euro might help secure the primacy of the dollar - and therefore perhaps of the United States itself - for years to come.

But others believe a European collapse would be a sign of things to come for the US as well. Bharat Karnad, a colleague of Chellaney at the Centre for Policy Research, argues that whatever happens powers such as China are on the rise and that the West will be increasingly challenged regardless of what happens to the euro.

"The health of the euro or the EU, for that matter, will have a marginal impact on gold and power that is tending any way towards Asia, especially China," he said.

Washington takes the potential threat of Europe's unravelling very seriously. In the short-term, the Obama administration is clearly concerned over the electoral fallout should the crisis in Europe cross the Atlantic before November's presidential election.

But in the longer term, whether the euro survives or not US planners are beginning to face up to the fact that the continent will likely be poorer and rather more self-centred than Washington had hoped.

Washington has long been pushing European powers to take more responsibility for their own immediate neighbourhood. While Britain and France took the political lead in Libya last year, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates complained European NATO forces were in fact almost entirely dependent on US munitions, logistics and other backup.

But the change in European thinking and the additional defence spending Washington called for now looks all but impossible in this time of austerity.

WASHINGTON WORRIED

"It's doubtful any future US Defence Secretary is even going to bother to make that kind of pitch," says Gvosdev at the US Naval War College. "We'd hoped Europe could take the lead in some parts of North Africa as well as the Balkans and Eastern Europe. That now looks very unlikely."

US planners were also waking up to the fact that European states were no longer likely to match US donor pledges when it came to humanitarian or financial aid for war zones and troublespots, he said. Then, there were longer term strategic concerns.

Washington's military "pivot " towards Asia, he said, had been based in part on the assumption that Europe would remain stable and wealthy and the US now had little or nothing to worry about on its North Atlantic flank. A weakened Europe could make US planners much less confident of that, particularly if China extends its influence.

Beijing has upped its investments in Europe in recent years, including major port projects in Greece and Italy.

Some political analysts contend the weaknesses and drivers behind the euro zone crisis go much further and can be found in most western economies - including the United States itself.

"The jettison involves essentially the ballast which used to provide stability to the vessel of post-war society," Jin Liqun, chairman of the supervisory board for China's sovereign wealth fund the China Investment Corporation, wrote on May 21 in Communist Party-run newspaper the People's Daily, making it clear he saw similar problems in the US.

Some waning of Europe's international influence was always likely, experts say, with an ageing population chewing up ever more resources and emerging economies inevitably growing faster. But the current crisis could supercharge its decline. Whether the continent's leaders realise that, however, is another matter.

"Europe's main source of influence (should) be the success of its political and economic model in providing high living standards and democratic freedoms," says Jack Goldstone, professor of international affairs at George Mason University near Washington DC "If the current crisis undermines both of those as well, Europe will look like a rather weak, badly run system of ageing and economically stagnant states. Irrelevance awaits." (editing by Janet McBride)

Benarkah Microsoft Siapkan Tablet Sendiri?

Exiting My Business ? Why Should I Plan? - Retail Tire Solutions

I talk to many business owners and I always ask the question, ?How and when do you plan to exit this business?? It never ceases to amaze me how many people tell me, ?I am never going to leave my business; this is my life.? Let me put that myth to rest immediately. Every business owner WILL leave their business. They may leave it vertically or they may leave it horizontally, but they will leave it.

That being said, it is obvious that exit planning is very critical to business owners, but especially small business owners. Why? Let?s look at some statistics from the Small Business Administration.

  • There are approximately 23 million businesses in theUS. Of these businesses, 99.7% have fewer than 500 employees. In other words, small business!
  • Over 65% of these businesses are family owned or closely held businesses.
  • Over 50% of small businesses are owned by individuals over 50 years of age.

What does this say? There will be more businesses hitting the market for sale in the next 10 to 15 years than ever before in history. As the baby boomer generation moves closer and closer to retirement, they will be looking to exit their businesses.

The first, and often, preferred method of exiting a business is by passing it along to the next generation. This method is fraught with challenges, the least of which is the ability of the next generation to manage the business and keep it profitable. Statistics show that 70% of businesses passed on to the next generation fail within the first three years.

Another method of exiting a business is putting it up for sale. If you remember from the paragraph above, there will be lots of businesses for sale in the coming years. What happens to any commodity on the market when there is excess supply and not enough demand? The price will go down. Only the businesses that are the best prepared for transition will realize top market prices. It will be a very competitive market and unprepared businesses (and their owners) will not realize their potential value.

Preparing to exit your business, regardless of the method used, takes preparation, forethought, planning and execution. It is never too early to start the process of exit planning. It is easier to start and to grow your business than it will be to exit your business.

B2B CFO? ?offers a methodology called ?Finding the Exit? that helps business owners plan for the eventual exit from their company. This methodology is a planning process that will help you set goals and move toward the eventual day when you no longer own the business. Call for a free consultation and prepare to receive the full value for your business.

Egypt's Islamists give secular parties equal role in constitution writing

Islamists and secularists agreed to a 50-50 split on the constituent assembly, tasked with writing a new constitution. The deal came after the military issued a 48-hour ultimatum.

Egyptian protesters shout slogans at a protest in Tahrir Square, Cairo, Friday, June 8. Hundreds gathered in Tahrir Square, the focal point of Egyptian uprising, to demonstrate against presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq, Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, ahead of a run-off vote.

Egypt?s political forces have reached an 11th-hour agreement on who will write a new constitution, ending a months-long deadlock and barely averting unilateral action by the ruling military council. The deal is a boost for secularists as the military prepares to hand over power to a civilian government by July.?

Writing a new constitution is a key step in Egypt?s transition because it will not only define the powers of the new president and the parliament, but it will also lay out the relationship between Islam and the state and define the military?s role in politics.

The military has indicated that it will attempt to retain its political influence and privileges even after handing power to an elected president, and this week threatened to unilaterally impose a constitutional declaration if political parties had not reached a consensus by Thursday.

Under this ultimatum, the two sides resolved a bitter deadlock over how much sway Islamists and secularists would each have over the constituent assembly, tasked with writing the new constitution.

Secular parties wanted enough influence to be able to block attempts to make the constitution more Islamic, while the Muslim Brotherhood?s Freedom and Justice party (FJP) wanted the body to reflect the makeup of the parliament. Egyptians voted overwhelmingly for Islamist parties in December elections, giving such parties nearly three-fourths of the seats in parliament, though in the first round of presidential elections more than 50 percent of the vote went to non-Islamic candidates. ?

After nearly six hours of negotiation Thursday, the parties agreed that the 100-member body will be divided evenly between secular and Islamist forces. The 50-50 split is a victory for secular and liberal parties, who make up only about a quarter of the parliament. They had boycotted the first assembly that was formed after Islamist parties dominated it, and a court later dissolved the body.

"I?think this is very important. This is a great step to protect Egypt against writing an Islamic constitution," says Mohamed Aboulghar, the leader of the secular-oriented Egyptian Social Democratic Party.

The FJP didn't respond to multiple requests for comment.

Firsthand account of negotiations

Talks Wednesday ended in deadlock despite going into the wee hours. The FJP had originally insisted on retaining 55 percent of the seats on the constituent assembly, but secular parties refused to budge on their demand of an even split.

Dr. Aboulghar says the negotiations yesterday afternoon again dragged on into the night, as the FJP representatives took breaks to phone the leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood to confer. The meeting was held at the Ministry of Defense, where mobile phone signals are blocked. Each time the FJP representatives wanted to make a phone call, they had to leave the building, he says.

Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, Egypt?s de facto leader, was in the meeting, as well as Gen. Sami Enan and six other members of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which took over when a popular uprising ousted President Hosni Mubarak last year.

Each time the two sides reached an impasse, the generals would threaten to issue their own constitutional declaration or revert back to the 1971 constitution, says Aboulghar, spurring more compromise. He adds that they did not otherwise intervene in the discussions.

A week to presidential run-off

The breakthrough comes just a week before a run-off election that will decide Egypt?s next president, as a cloud of legal and political uncertainty hangs over the last few weeks of Egypt?s transition to a civilian government.

Egypt?s High Constitutional Court is expected to hear a case next week on a law that could disqualify Ahmed Shafiq (see profile), one of the candidates in the run-off race. It is also expected to hear a case related to the law that governed Egypt?s parliamentary elections. If the court finds the law was unconstitutional, it could dissolve the newly elected parliament.

Such uncertainty, along with the desire to avoid military intervention, likely helped persuade the Muslim Brotherhood?s FJP to compromise. Another factor was likely the Brotherhood's desire to win goodwill among political forces and popular opinion in support of its presidential candidate, Mohamed Morsi (see profile).

The political parties will meet tomorrow to agree on the names of the committee members, and will negotiate over the non-political members to ensure an even split between figures associated with political Islam and those considered secular.

Fiona Apple's 'Every Single Night' Video To Premiere Sunday

Singer unveils a teaser for the video — her first in more than six years — ahead of its premiere on the Sundance Channel.

Fiona Apple is making her triumphant return to the world of music videos with "Every Single Night," a brand-new clip set to premiere Sunday (June 10) at 8 p.m. ET on the Sundance Channel.

But before the big debut, Apple is giving her fans a sneak peek at the clip, unveiling a teaser trailer that's just 15 seconds long ... but definitely whets the appetite.

In the clip — directed by Joseph Cahill, a filmmaker who has made a series of eye-popping, whimsical videos for the likes of Raul Paz and Emily Loizeau — we see Apple lying in a field, while an electric-blue sky floats above her, swimming above water and walking through the streets of Paris while a giant squid attacks the Eiffel Tower. So, yeah, it'll definitely be interesting.

"Every Single Night" is, of course, the proper single off Apple's upcoming The Idler Wheel, her first album in nearly seven years. And the video is the first she's done in more than six years ... her last was the 2006 clip for "Not About Love," which starred a pre-"Hangover" Zach Galifianakis and his magical dance moves.

The Idler Wheel is in stores June 19, and that same day, Apple will launch a full-scale North American tour in support of the disc. Her trek kicks off at the State Theatre in Ithaca, New York, and runs until July 29, with a gig at the Hollywood Palladium.

New drug offers hope vs. breast cancer

FILE - In this March 16, 2006 file photo Roche buildings are pictured in Basel, Switzerland. Roche Holding AG reported Thursday, April 12, 2012, that group sales dipped one percent to 11.03 billion Swiss francs (US dollars 12.05 billion) in the first quarter, while hinting that it might be prepared to raise its offer for U.S. diagnostics firm Illumina Inc. (AP Photo/Keystone, Georgios Kefalas, File)

Roche Holding developed a man-made antibody under the brand name Herceptin, part of an experimental drug in the fight against breast cancer.

An experimental drug has shown stunning results in delaying the progression of a specific type of breast cancer and prolonging the lives of patients.

The drug, dubbed T-DM1, acts like a ?smart bomb? that delivers cancer-killing chemicals directly to tumors while sparing surrounding healthy cells.

Researchers say the combo has been effective in treating women with HER2-positive breast cancer, an aggressive form of the disease battled by about 25% of breast cancer patients.

The treatment can stop the disease from metastasizing for 9.6 months, compared with 6.4 months with standard therapies.

?It?s a brand-new way of treating HER2-positive breast cancer,? lead study author Dr. Kimberly Blackwell told CNN. ?This will offer a very important therapeutic option for patients faced with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer.?

Blackwell, a professor of medicine at Duke University, said patients on the experimental drug also had fewer side effects like nausea and fatigue than those undergoing standard cancer-fighting therapies.

Results of the study of 1,000 patients were revealed Sunday at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago.

The T in T-DM1 refers to the drug called trastuzumab emtansine, a man-made antibody developed by Roche Holdings under the brand name Herceptin. DM1 refers to the powerful chemotherapy called emtasine.

About 65% of participants getting the T-DM1 combo treatment were still alive after two years, compared with 48% of patients on standard treatment, Blackwell said.

?The data are pretty compelling,? said Dr. Michael Link, president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

?It?s sort of a smart bomb kind of therapy, a poison delivered to the tumor . . . and not a lot of other collateral damage to other organs,? he told ABC News.

Exploring Online Affiliated Sales | World And World

Affiliates are an extended sales force for one?s business. Affiliate marketing, using one website to drive traffic to another, is a form of online marketing. While search engines, e-mail, and website syndication capture much of the attention of online retailers creating lead capture page, affiliate sales carry a much lower profile. Still, affiliate sales continue to play a significant role in e-retailers? marketing strategies. According to Rory S White, a full time internet marketer, affiliate marketing is absolutely vital for success in any online business. Rory White has developed and worked with numerous marketing systems over the years & developed new ways to advertise through total traffic explosion. In addition, Rory White shows how to drive traffic to user?s website easily and how to build user?s business with eager-paying customers that seek him or her out! Creative Advertisers always seek for different ways to advertise creating catchy slogans that capture consumer attention. Eventually, these creative strategies promote publicity, public relations, personal selling, sales promotion, & affiliate sales.

Affiliate marketing overlaps with other Internet marketing methods including organic search engine optimization, paid search engine marketing, e-mail marketing, and in some sense display advertising. On the other hand, affiliate marketing sometimes uses less orthodox techniques, such as publishing reviews of products or services offered by a partner as ways to advertise. The translation of the revenue share principles to mainstream e-commerce happened almost four years after the origination of the World Wide Web in November 1994 when CDNOW launched its BuyWeb program. With this program CDNOW was the first non-adult website to introduce the concept of affiliate sales or associate program with its idea of click-through purchasing. In July 1996, Amazon. com launched its associate program. Affiliate sales have grown quickly since its inception. According to one report, the total sales amount generated through affiliate networks in 2006 was ?2. 16 billion in the United Kingdom alone. The estimates were ?1. 35 billion in sales in 2005. MarketingSherpa?s research team estimated that, in 2006, affiliates worldwide earned US$6. 5 billion in bounty and commissions from a variety of sources in retail, personal finance, gaming and gambling, travel, telecom, education, publishing, and forms of lead generation other than contextual advertising programs such as Google AdSense. Currently, the new concept of creating lead capture page or landing page, a page that appears when a potential customer clicks on an advertisement or a search-engine result link, is also being popular. In pay per click (PPC) campaigns, the lead capture page will also be customized to measure the effectiveness of different advertisements. Rory White has made affiliated marketing even easier through lead capture page ensuring software (by Jeff Long) that allows users to turn any website page into a lead capture page that can link directly into users? own autoresponder. Rory White also ensures every single user a unique identity by dint of WhoIsDirectory. com.

In today?s bizarre of network, it is almost impossible locating a single user on the vast ocean of Internet, with over 100 million websites. The solution to this problem may be the WhoIsDirectory. com which is making it easier for the user getting a personal and business WhoIsDirectory. com domain names and websites & thus to be found amongst the vast Internet crowd.
