Will hurricane Sandy raise your utility bill?

If hurricane Irene is any indication, the cost of extra labor and equipment repairs in the wake of hurricane Sandy will mean higher utility bills for some customers.

By David J. Unger,?Correspondent / October 31, 2012

Power lines devastated by fire and the effects of hurricane Sandy are seen in the Breezy Point section of the Queens borough of New York Tuesday. If past hurricanes are any indication, utility bills will go up.

Hurricane Sandy may cost the US economy anywhere from $30 billion to $50 billion, according to preliminary assessments. A big portion of that bill will be paid by utilities as they scramble to repair downed lines and restore power to millions of customers.

And that means higher utility bills down the road for those customers, if previous hurricanes are any indication.

Utilities say they won't know the exact numbers for weeks, but?Allan Drury, a spokesman for New York-based Consolidated Edison, expects the cost to utilities to be high.?"[T]he empirical evidence would point to it being very expensive, because so many customers are out of service."

As of 1:30 pm Tuesday,?about 860,000 Consolidated Edison customers were without power, Mr. Drury said in a telephone interview, more than four times the number of homes and businesses who lost power during last summer's hurricane Irene. ??

Between the added labor needed to restore power and the complicated repairs to damaged infrastructure, costs will add up quickly.

"We have outside contractor crews ? and bills that will have to come in ? that all becomes a part of the cost of storm restoration," David Graves, a spokesperson for National Grid, said in a voice message. "It?s going to be some time before we have all the accounting in place."

The British-based utility serves Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York in the United States.

So who pays for all the overtime labor, downed wires, and blown transformers??

Ratepayers typically cover the costs associated with storms, Drury said, but the effect isn't always direct. "We don?t say, 'Here?s a storm, we now have to charge more.' "

Con Ed's utility rates are set on a one- or three-year basis by the New York State Public Service Commission.?A spokesperson for New York's Public Service Commission did not return a call for comment Tuesday afternoon.

If hurricane Sandy is anything like hurricane Irene, customers in the areas hardest hit may see a jump in utility rates.

In southern Vermont, for example, where Irene did its most damage, Central Vermont Public Service Corp.?customers who use an average of 600 kilowatt-hours a month are to pay a $2.23 monthly surcharge over four years to recoup the hurricane costs.?

Public Service of New Hampshire customers will pay 12 cents a month over four years for the utility to recover $7.1 million in Irene damages.

Last week,?Atlantic City Electric announced it received permission from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to increase rates?increase by $3.44 or 1.9 percent for a typical residential customer. The company attributes the hike to the rising cost of infrastructure maintenance and restoration costs associated with hurricane Irene.

Wheat Belly Diet

When you hear a lot about a particular diet either online or on television, if you are like most people, you tend to get a little suspicious. The Wheat Belly Diet has gotten a lot of press recently and before you jump right into it, you should understand not only how it works but also what it can do for you both in the short term and the long run.

What Is the Wheat Belly Diet?

This diet operates under the impression that the extra fat that a lot of us have around our mid-section is because of the modern type of wheat products that we are eating and there is sufficient proof to believe this is true. The wheat that you and I eat today is nothing like what was served on the table even a few generations ago and because our body is not designed to deal with chemically altered food, it tends to turn to fat.

Does The Wheat Belly Diet Work?

The first thing that you will notice when you go on this diet is that you instantly notice a difference around your waist. The result of this is that your body is getting more energy (from the fat), and you will feel better. Also, you will notice other wheat belly diet side effects, such as less aches and pains, clearer thinking and memory, and you may even notice that some of your gastrointestinal problems are solved, too.

What About Weight Loss with the Wheat Belly Diet?

Obviously, most people who are interested in this diet in the first place are overweight or obese, so you are probably wondering about what it can do for you in terms of your overall weight. First of all, the Wheat Belly Diet is designed to help you lose weight in the long run, so you shouldn't expect too many pounds dropping off quickly. But, you will probably lose one to two pounds per week until you reach your optimal weight. Some people can lose up to 10% of their body weight within a few months, which is about the right speed to lose it.

Where Can You Get More Wheat Belly Diet Reviews and Recipes?

If there is one thing that you need to be sure of, it is that you will need as much information as you can get if you are going to go on the Wheat Belly Diet. This isn't just a matter of going gluten-free ??? you need to make more substantial changes in order for you to get the best possible results. So, do your research first so when you are ready to go on the diet, you will be prepared for what follows.

Resveratrol Supplements May Offer Little Benefit for Healthy People

Resveratrol ? the red wine compound often touted for its possible healthful and anti-aging effects ? may not bring the benefits to healthy people that preliminary research has suggested, a small new study finds.

In the 12-week study, 29 healthy women, most of them in their late 50s, were given either resveratrol supplements or a placebo. No appreciable differences were found after the 12 weeks between the two groups in regard to body fat, resting metabolic rate, fat levels in the blood, or markers of inflammation.

"Our data demonstrate that resveratrol supplementation does not have metabolic benefits in relatively healthy middle-aged women," study researcher Dr. Samuel Klein, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis, said in a statement.

People with metabolic problems did not take part in the study, and it is still possible resveratrol might benefit them, Klein noted.

Although annual sales of resveratrol supplements in the U.S. have risen to $30 million, "few studies have evaluated the effects of resveratrol in people," Klein said. The supplements' popularity may be due to studies on animals and cells growing in lab dishes, which have suggested resveratrol improves metabolism or could prevent or reverse chronic health problems such as diabetes and heart disease, he said.

Fifteen of the post-menopausal women in the study took 75-milligram supplements of resveratrol daily ? equivalent to the amount they'd get from drinking eight liters of red wine. The other 14 took a placebo pill.

It's not surprising that the study did not find any effect from a mere 75-milligram daily dose, said Dr. Jay Chung, chief of the Laboratory of Obesity and Aging Research at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, who was not involved in the new study.

Studies showing beneficial metabolic effects of resveratrol have used higher doses, of 150 mg to 2,000 mg day, Chung told MyHealthNewsDaily.

However, he said, "In my opinion, resveratrol is highly unlikely to have any benefits in metabolically healthy individuals."

In people with glucose intolerance ? a "pre-diabetes" condition in which a person's blood sugar levels are high but not high enough to warrant a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes ? it's possible that high doses of the compound may have an effect, Chung said, but treatments such as the diabetes drug metformin are a much safer and more effective option. The long-term effects of high doses of resveratrol are not known, he added. ?

The study is published today (Oct. 25) in the journal Cell Metabolism.

Pass it on: A much-touted compound in red wine showed no metabolic benefits for healthy middle-age women in a small study.

Florida Republican voters targeted by bogus letters

Tampa Bay Times

The Florida Division of Elections and state law enforcement officials are investigating reports from at least 24 counties ? including Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas ? that eligible voters have received bogus letters saying they have been flagged as suspected noncitizen voters.

The letters are written to make it look like they came from the recipient?s local supervisor of elections office. The envelopes carry a similar notation. But they are not official letters and supervisors are alerting residents of the hoax.

Seemingly aimed at politically active Republicans, it?s the latest case involving voter fraud to emerge in Florida and it comes less than two weeks before the Nov. 6 election.

"It makes me angry," said Jeff Guerra, a 43-year-old sales representative from New Port Richey who received a letter Tuesday. "I want this to be an honest election. Something like this is obviously a scam, I?m really taken aback."

Officials know of "dozens" of fraudulent letters but that number could climb in the next few days, said Chris Cate, spokesman for Secretary of State Ken Detzner. The case has been referred to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the FBI.

"We don?t know the intention of the letters," Cate said. "They certainly have the possibility of intimidating voters. ... We?re going to make sure the people who did this are brought to justice."

The case could be interpreted as voter intimidation, Cate said, which is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in jail.

Finding out more about those behind the mailing might be difficult, said Gretl Plessinger, spokeswoman for the FDLE, which launched a criminal investigation into the case Tuesday. Two weeks ago, the agency launched another criminal investigation into a case involving fraudulent voter registration applications filed by a private vendor hired by the Republican Party of Florida.

"We?ll be reaching out to other states and contacting the letter recipients for the purpose of identifying commonalities," Plessinger said.

The letters arrived in envelopes with a Seattle, Wash., postmark and a date of Oct. 17. They all have the same type of letter head, with the American flag as a backdrop to a silhouette of a bald eagle in the upper left corner. The sender swapped out the name of the supervisor of elections depending on which county they were received.

"I?ve never seen anybody go this far in trying to fake something from this office," said Linda Tanko, a senior elections supervisor in Orange County. "It?s mean-spirited and it?s causing confusion at a critical point in the election."

The recipients are similar ? most are Republican, vote frequently and contribute to campaigns. Jacksonville City Council President Bill Bishop and former U.S. Ambassador John Rood each got one.

Republican Charles Callaghan of Ponte Vedra opened his letter Saturday.

"I sat there and actually had to read it a couple times because I didn?t understand what it said at first," Callaghan recounted. It claimed to be from the St. Johns County elections supervisor, informing him that he may be ineligible to vote and "registering to vote under fraudulent conditions or swearing a false oath are both third-degree felonies in Florida."

Ion Sancho, Leon County?s Supervisor of Elections, told CNN, "I suspect that whoever is sending out these letters has purchased some kind of a donor or campaign list that?s given him a group of high-profile Republicans."

The letters inform recipients they have 15 days to fill out a voter eligibility form and return it to the county elections office. If they don?t, they?ll be removed from the voter rolls, the letter warns.

Howard Simon, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, blames Gov. Rick Scott?s push to purge noncitizens from the voter rolls.

"The state has created a lot of confusion about citizenship and eligibility," Simon said. "No one can be reasonably surprised that people have stepped in to take advantage of the confusion."

Guerra, who said he never misses a vote and contributed $100 to John McCain?s 2008 presidential bid, recently re-registered to vote and called Pasco County?s Supervisor of Elections office Tuesday after he got his letter. They put out an alert.

By then 23 other counties had reported complaints. Brevard County on Friday was the first to contact the Division of Elections. On Monday, the state alerted all 67 counties after getting more complaints.

A coalition of voting rights advocates said they are concerned.

"Anyone responsible for this blatant attempt to tamper with the votes of Florida citizens and threaten to thwart their right to vote just days before Election Day ought to be brought to justice," said Gihan Perera, Florida New Majority?s Executive Director.

What earnings reports have revealed about ads

Companies that sell advertising have begun releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. Here are highlights of recent quarterly earnings reports from selected Internet and media companies and what they say about the state of spending on advertising.

? Oct. 15: Gannett Co. reports higher net income and revenue, helped by strong gains in political and Olympics-related advertising.

? Oct. 16: Advertising and marketing company Omnicom Group Inc. reports nearly flat earnings and revenue compared with a year earlier, as U.S. revenue grew but international revenue declined.

? Oct. 17: Television and digital media company Media General Inc. says its third-quarter net loss widened because of higher expenses, but revenue grew sharply thanks to an increase in political advertising and the Olympics.

? Oct. 18: Google Inc. says ad revenue rose 16 percent from the same time last year, the slowest pace in three years. The company's ad revenue had climbed by at least 21 percent in each of the previous 10 quarters. As has been the case for the past year, the average prices companies pay Google for ads appearing alongside search results also fell. The decelerating growth in ad revenue is likely being driven by the growing use of smartphones and tablet computers to access the Internet. The ads are more difficult to see on smartphones, in particular, so marketers aren't willing to pay as much.

Microsoft Corp. says revenue in its online services division grew 9 percent to $697 million, while operating loss fell 29 percent to $364 million. Online advertising revenue grew 15 percent to $655 million, with growth in search advertising revenue partly offset by lower revenue from display advertising. Microsoft says search revenue grew because of increased revenue per search and increased volumes.

? Monday: Yahoo Inc. reports net revenue that barely grew at a time when advertisers are spending more money marketing their products and services online. Still, it beat expectations. Net revenue in the latest quarter rose 2 percent to $1.09 billion ? about $10 million more than analysts had predicted. Net revenue is the amount of money Yahoo keeps after paying its commission to search partner Microsoft and other sites that run its ads.

? Tuesday: Facebook Inc. discloses that some 14 percent of its ad revenue came from mobile advertising. It started showing ads to users who access Facebook from their phones and tablet computers about six months ago. Investors have been worried that Facebook isn't taking advantage of its growing mobile user base.

Coming up:

? Thursday: The New York Times Co., WPP Group PLC, The McClatchy Co.

? Friday: Comcast Corp., The Interpublic Group of Cos.

? Oct. 31: Time Warner Cable Inc.

? Nov. 2: The Washington Post Co., Clear Channel

? Nov. 6: AOL Inc.

? Nov. 7: Time Warner Inc., CBS Corp.

? Nov. 8: The Walt Disney Co.

? Nov. 15: Viacom Inc.

  1. As a PADI Professional, I recently attended a lecture from a Chamber Operator / Technician (Chamber located within an International Hospital), and I was a bit surprised to hear this individual describe "documented scientific evidence" gleaned from data taken from frequent and long-term recreational divers. I want to emphasize that he was NOT talking about technical or commercial divers (nor about divers who have experienced DCI / DCS in the past), but simply people who dive somewhat regularly at recreational depths. He wasn't specific as to the definition of "frequent" divers, but as a PADI Instructor who make a living teaching-diving, I inferred that I would certainly fall into that group. He claimed that in this group there is peer-reviewed (documented) evidence of short-term memory loss, lessening of high-cognitive functions, more likelihood of frequent headaches (and migraines), and higher susceptibility to depression and mental illness. This sentence was taken verbatim, so I could enter it again on this forum. So, can anybody please refer me to such articles or data--he basically said that repetitive diving makes us "stupid" over a period of years, and I'm not inclined to believe that without some peer-reviewed evidence from the Baro-medical community! Maybe I'm just "in denial" here, but I want some hard FACTS! I'd appreciate any data or web links that you can provide to enlighten me--or disprove that fellow's rather frightening statement! HB

  2. I've never heard anything of the sort ... but they do say that you have to be nuts to dive, so perhaps it is the other way round?
I refuse to believe that corporations are people until Texas executes one.

"Too often ... people enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought" - Leapfrog
"They are the McDonalds of diver certification. Quick, inexpensive and tasty. Pardon me for saying so, but I also believe it to be a health hazard." - DCBC
"It truly does boil down to motivation ... if you believe something is hard, or unnecessary to learn, you won't learn it ... even if it's completely within your capability" - Bob (Grateful Diver)

  3. Indeed, neither had I (until that lecture), and that's what makes it so discouraging (and frightening!) to people like myself who earn their living in diving and are in the water several times a week. I suppose his premise is that our exposure to pressures while diving (even at recreational depths) causes some type of neural degradation...but this is just conjecture on my part. Thus, my request for HARD data that is peer-reviewed.......it would sure be nice to know, either way!

  4. I agree with him.

there was a time several years in succession of repetitive dives. weekends would be around 8 dives, with some weekday dives, and even some weeks of daily diving and even months of daily diving at open water.

now it is depressing when you start to head back to the city to face traffic pollution etc.

when in the city its hard to keep your mind on city stuff so in a way memory loss.

headaches most probably due to pollution of city and city stress.

it is depressive as you long to go back to the sea and have to endure city life. it makes you sick.

actively doing repetitive diving would make you into dive mode so you may be alert on those repetitive dives since you are aware of the gas buildup in your system hence you need to be very mindfull of this. after all it literally is your life that depends on it. now would you think of anything else other than your repetitive dive. to the non-repetitive diver that is stupid.

    IMHO

    paolo

New guidelines to prevent cheerleading injuries

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Over the past few decades, cheerleading has evolved from leading the crowd in cheers at football games to a competitive, year-round sport featuring complex acrobatic stunts performed by a growing number of athletes- and as a result the number and severity of injuries from cheerleading has also surged.

In a new policy statement, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) urges coaches, parents and school officials to follow injury-prevention guidelines, develop emergency plans and ensure cheerleading programs have access to the same level of qualified coaches, medical care and injury surveillance as other sports.

"Cheerleading has become extremely competitive in the past few years, incorporating more complex skills than ever before," said pediatric sports medicine specialist Cynthia LaBella, MD, FAAP, member of the AAP Council on Sports Medicine & Fitness and co-author of the new guidelines. "Relatively speaking, the injury rate is low compared to other sports, but despite the overall lower rate, the number of catastrophic injuries continues to climb. That is an area of concern and needs attention for improving safety."

The policy statement, "Cheerleading Injuries: Epidemiology and Recommendations for Prevention," will be released at a news conference at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at the AAP National Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans and published in the November 2012 issue of Pediatrics (published online Oct. 22).

Although most high schools and colleges have cheerleaders, only 29 state high school athletic associations recognize cheerleading as a sport, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) does not include competitive cheerleading in its list of sponsored sports. This is important, according to the AAP, because being classified as a sport gives athletes valuable protection including qualified coaches, well-maintained practice facilities, access to certified athletic trainers, mandated sports physicals and surveillance of injuries.

From 1990 to 2003, the number of U.S. cheerleaders age 6 and older increased by roughly 600,000, from 3 million to 3.6 million. Since 2007, there are 26,000 cheerleading injuries in the U.S. annually. Cheerleading accounts for 66 percent of all catastrophic injuries in high school female athletes over the past 25 years.

Most injuries are sprains and strains to the lower extremities, followed by head and neck injuries.

Cheerleading can include fast-paced floor routines and physically demanding skills, including pyramid building and lifting, tossing, and catching athletes in the air. These stunts account for 42 percent to 60 percent of all injuries, and 96 percent of all concussions. Cheerleading is one of the highest risk sporting events for direct catastrophic injuries that can result in permanent brain injury, paralysis or death.

Risk factors for cheerleading injuries include previous injury, cheering on hard surfaces, higher body mass index, performing complicated stunts, and inadequate coaching. As in other sports, cheerleading injury rates increase with competition level and age. Collegiate cheerleaders have a higher rate of injury than middle and high school competitors.

"Most serious injuries, including catastrophic ones, occur while performing complex stunts such as pyramids, according to Jeffrey Mjaanes, MD, FAAP, FACSM, member of the AAP Council on Sports Medicine & Fitness and co-author of the new guidelines. "Simple steps to improve safety during these stunts could significantly decrease the injury rate and protect young cheerleaders."

The AAP makes key recommendations for preventing injuries, including:

  • Cheerleading should be designated as a sport in all states, allowing for benefits such as qualified coaches, better access to medical care and injury surveillance.

  • All cheerleaders should have a pre-season physical, and access to qualified strength and conditioning coaches.

  • Cheerleaders should be trained in all spotting techniques and only attempt stunts after demonstrating appropriate skill progression.

  • Pyramid and partner stunts should be performed only on a spring/foam floor or grass/turf. Never perform stunts on hard, wet or uneven surfaces. Pyramids should not be more than 2 people high.

  • Coaches, parents and athletes should have access to a written emergency plan.

  • Any cheerleader suspected of having a head injury should be removed from practice or competition and not allowed to return until he or she has clearance from a health professional.

Multiple Sclerosis MS Treatment eBook Cure By ... - Fitness For Health

Multiple Sclerosis MS Treatment eBook Cure By Dr. Gary M. LevinClick Image To Visit SiteYou are unable to enjoy your favorite things knowing the next attack is just a matter of time. Sometimes the attack?s "remission" leaves you with residual, usually permanent, and scary symptoms. You suffer month after month and find you are losing hope of ever getting better.

That?s a very sad place for anyone to be. I know. I?ve been treating patients with multiple sclerosis for 30 years.

It?s like your body is fighting an all-out war with a dangerous intruder that doesn?t exist. Your doctor may be putting on a brave face, but the truth is many physicians are just as frustrated as you are. They try every known cure, treatment and medically accepted idea ? yet NOTHING works!

In 1998, 13 years ago, I had a heart ailment which required surgical intervention. While recovering in cardiac rehabilitation, I had the unexpected opportunity to work with a colleague who practiced allopathic and alternative medicine. I was very impressed with what I saw.

Having been trained in the sciences, I decided to dive deep into this approach, serve a two-year preceptorship and test natural remedies and alternative treatments for diseases.

It was here that I discovered powerful breakthroughs that would have profound impacts for Multiple Sclerosis patients. Here was the highly effective KEY to slowing deterioration, preventing attacks, and promoting regeneration.

The healing process is carried out through a simple step-by-step method that rehabilitates your immune system and boosts your supporting body systems to rid it of all symptoms (and types) of Multiple Sclerosis PLUS re-energizes and purifies your body for maximum health.

To be honest, I would have been elated if my step-by-step Treatment System simply produced modest improvements in my patients. But the results were far better than anyone could ever expect?

Well, this may sound unusual, but if you think about it again you will come to the same conclusion as I did: "Multiple Sclerosis is just another symptom of the REAL disease you have"

So what is the real disease you suffer from? Well, the simple answer is that you have an overactive immune system disease. Your immune system "freaks out" when it meets your myelin sheaths and attacks them. The fact that you are diagnosed with MS is just because of the fact that your immune system "freaks out" in a way that creates the MS symptoms. But you?re NOT having a "MS" disease. You are having an overactive or blinded immune system disease!

The sad truth is that the strong toxic effect of all these drugs gradually poisons the whole body, which at the end of the day, only makes Multiple Sclerosis attacks and permanent damage worse!

The healing process is done by using a simple step-by-step method that rehabilitates your immune system and boosts supporting body systems to get rid of all symptoms (and types) of Multiple Sclerosis PLUS re-energizes and purifies your body for maximum health.

It shouldn?t be any surprise to people that directed nutrition and simple plants and vitamins can be the basis for powerful cures. Contrary to popular belief, even prescription drugs aren?t wholly manufactured from synthetics. Often a rare plant, available only in the rain forests of the Amazon, is the basis of powerful prescription medications. And don?t forget that your body is MADE FROM natural materials and incorporates a system that uses natural products such as food to constantly rebuild and heal. I followed this basic principle of pharmacology to find life-giving plants and herbs that could be the basis for reversing Multiple Sclerosis. This would not only give patients comfort and new hope, but give their bodies a way to build strength and coordination and promote a far stronger immune system.

The vast majority of people see a major improvement within just a few short weeks. It really doesn?t matter how long you have suffered with Multiple Sclerosis or what else you have tried, the results are almost always the same.

MY method treats ALL types including: "Benign" MS, clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), galloping MS, Schilder?s Disease and Neuromyelitis optica (Devic?s Syndrome).

Natural and alternative medicine works on the WHOLE body. It deals with "system healing" ? not specific disease healing, which is why you can never find one exact formula fit to heal each and every person.

Hard to believe? That?s right, I myself can?t comprehend it but numbers don?t lie. Today ADRs are the third leading cause of death!

The danger of passive smoking or illegal drugs is frequently aired in heath campaigns and outraged newspaper editorials, but ADRs ? which exact a far greater toll of misery ? very rarely trigger the same level of indignation.

If you were to ask most doctors about ADRs, they would give you one of the answers I used to give? Read more?

Do You Need a Disciplined Social Media ... - Business 2 Community

I frequently answer questions and advise potential clients on the importance of hiring a social media community manager who has personal expectations (and who you can expect) to be mature, friendly, level-headed and most importantly, disciplined in their approach to managing your social communities. They are there, responsible for watching and tending to your community / garden while you are not, especially during typical ?off? business hours of evening, weekends and holidays.

Two of my more popular blog posts cover the expectations you can have (and should implement) when hiring anyone to manage your social media communities:

How is a social media concierge different from a social media manager, social media and internet marketing agency or digital PR / blogger?

  • Less Cost / More Results: Less costly than a social media agency or full-time employee, a social media concierge brings to the table years of experience in business, marketing, sales and social media and knows how to develop high-value campaigns and relationships with virtually anyone in any social community, online and in real life.
  • Less Competition / More Results: Always a social butterfly, your social media concierge has access to all truly community-committed events, conferences and speakers, and will never ask you for an exclusive contract, making your concierge one of the few professionals you?ll hire who can easily work with all your existing marketing / PR contracts without competition, improving the results of your investment all around! Your social media concierge can negotiate media purchases & collaborative content that includes added-value & discounts others couldn?t even dream of asking for!
  • More Maturity / Fewer Problems: A marketing professional with 16-years experience working with agency, marketing and media professionals and long-term relationships to bring to your campaign. Your concierge will offer a non-disclosure / non-compete document to protect your business and community and let you sleep well at night. When problems (or trolls) arise, your concierge is there online at any time of day or night (holidays especially), bringing a level head to the situation and turning threats of negative viral PR into loyal community connection opportunities.
  • No Cookie-Cutter Solutions: Creative and strategic, you will always get unique and cost-efficient strategies for achieving your business goals through social media from your social media concierge. Technically proficient themselves, your social media concierge is also connected to a wide range of technical support providers, app creators & user experience architects.

If you watch @Sparkle_Agency at all times of day & night, you will frequently find your social media concierge participating in, attending and creating social media expert events, having a coffee with a tech CEO, brunch with a blogger, lunch with a media Director of Ad Sales or taking in a consumer event with a Marketing VP, Agency Director or PR Agency Founder.

This might seem odd to you, or offensive to your work schedule, but it is the schedule for social media because these are the hours that social media is most active and when businesses NEED their community manager to be watching their social communities, or at least to be available to take emergency calls from the manager who is ?on? when the social / consumer s**t hits the fan. If you?re a community manager and choose to stand by ?not working? weekends or evenings, for any reason, you are risking your client?s reputation; if anything happens on the social channels, you need to be available to help turn the tides immediately, before you find yourself facing an angry horde blogging, tweeting and facebooking to their communities to boycott your client?s business.

I don?t chase after work, and I don?t chase after client payments, so everyone who hires me or the few people I work with, does so on my terms and is thrilled with both our competency and results. My terms are not common, but also, community managers and social media professionals who work to my level of capability and experience are not common. These terms are much more common among web development/SEO companies, PR firms and lawyers. . If you?re still not sure what I have to offer, and want to see me in action, email me at debbie@theSparkleAgency.com to schedule a complimentary 30-minute conversation about your social media community manager needs. . Want me to attend your event, review your app, blog post or plans? Email me your offer! . Have immediate questions for your business about social media you?d like answered by a panel of experts on #SparkleSOS? Send me an email or ask them on Twitter to hashtag #SparkleSOSand I?ll add them to the queue for an upcoming live show! You might even be invited to join us on the show!

Cheerleading needs sports safety rules, docs say

(AP) ? Cheerleading isn't just jumping and waving pompoms ? it has become as athletic and potentially as dangerous as a sport and should be designated one to improve safety, the nation's leading group of pediatricians says.

The number of cheerleaders injured each year has climbed dramatically in the last two decades. Common stunts that pose risks include tossing and flipping cheerleaders in the air and creating human pyramids that reach 15 feet high or more.

In a new policy statement released online Monday in the journal Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics says school sports associations should designate cheerleading as a sport, and make it subject to safety rules and better supervision. That would include on-site athletic trainers, limits on practice time and better qualified coaches, the academy says.

Just like other athletes, cheerleaders should be required to do conditioning exercises and undergo physical exams before joining the squad, the new policy says.

"Not everyone is fully aware of how cheerleading has evolved over the last couple of decades. It used to be just standing on the sidelines and doing cheers and maybe a few jumps," said Dr. Cynthia LaBella, a sports medicine specialist at Chicago's Lurie Children's Hospital and an author of the new policy.

But she said cheerleading often results in injuries that include severe sprains, broken arms and legs, neck injuries and concussions.

Last year, there were almost 37,000 emergency room visits for cheerleading injuries among girls aged 6 to 22, according to data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. That's more than four times higher than in 1980, when cheerleading was tamer.

While there are still traditional cheerleading squads that support schools' athletic teams, some schools and private clubs have separate cheerleading teams that compete against other teams.

Kali Wald of Elburn, Ill., suffered a serious concussion last year during an acrobatic routine with her high school's competitive team; teammates tossed her in the air but she landed wrong twice, first on her upper back and neck, then on her head. She blacked out for several minutes.

Her father, Dave Wald, said her coaches didn't realize she was seriously injured and never called an ambulance. She still has short-term memory loss and can't attend school full-time because of dizziness, headaches and other concussion symptoms.

Kali, 18, said she believes that cheerleading should be considered a sport and made safer.

Her father agreed and said there needs to be better awareness about the rigors of cheerleading and the potential risks.

Injuries have increased as cheerleading has become more popular. Data suggest there are more than 3 million cheerleaders nationwide aged 6 and older, mostly girls. That includes about 400,000 in high school, according to data cited in the new policy.

While the overall injury rate in high school cheerleading is lower than in other girls sports, including gymnastics, soccer and field hockey, the rate of catastrophic injuries like skull fractures and paralyzing spine injuries is higher, the academy noted.

Kasey Bronstein, 14, and her sister Kori, 17, of Mahwah, N.J., both tore a knee tendon while cheerleading for a private competitive team run by their parents. They twisted their knees doing acrobatic moves while standing on the raised-up hands of their teammates. They had knee surgery last November, followed by extensive physical therapy, and have returned to cheerleading.

Both said it should be considered a sport but they also think it's already pretty safe.

"They're kind of making it too safe, taking out skills that are very exciting to do," Kori said. That includes a double flip stunt no longer allowed on her team.

Some schools and state high school sports associations already consider cheerleading a sport and require the kind of safety oversight that the academy is recommending. But many do not, said Jim Lord, executive director of the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches & Administrators. Some don't consider it a sport because not all cheerleading squads are involved in their own competitions, he said.

Lord said the academy's policy mirrors many of his group's safety recommendations for high schools and colleges.

That includes limiting the height of human pyramids in high school cheerleading to just two people. The academy also says routines that include pyramids, tumbling or tosses should not be performed on hard surfaces.

Lisa Kluchorosky, a sports medicine specialist who works with the academy and the National Athletic Trainers Association, said the new policy will help erase misconceptions that cheerleading is not very athletic.

"The statistics are compelling and you can't turn your head from that," she said.

Tackling Breast Cancer

How the University of Florida is fighting against one of the deadliest diseases in the nation.

Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer.

Every 13 minutes, a woman dies from the disease, totaling nearly 40,000 women a year.

The seriousness of breast cancer can?t be understated. Yet according to the University of Florida Academic Health Center?s Breast Center, one of six Centers of Excellence in Florida, death rates from the disease are steadily decreasing. More than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors live in the U.S.

Increased awareness, improved treatments and early detection have been key, and UF is helping attack the disease head-on.

In the community, UF has raised awareness through events such as the Pink Pumpkin Fest held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In the lab, UF researchers launched more than 4,200 clinical research studies in the last four years with vital results.

For instance, studying how women?s genes and the environment affect cancer could lead to new drugs and treatments that prevent and kill the disease, says Lindy Brounley, UF Shands Cancer Center communications director.

Patients can extend long-term survival and cut down tumors through a UF-pioneered autoimmune response induced by radiotherapy. The process vaccinates women against their own cancer.

And UF researchers are leading the world?s first surveillance imaging trial to monitor breast cancer patients at a high risk of cancer spreading to their other organs, Brounley says.

See how else UF has been involved this year:

Looking to the future, UF Academic Health Center researchers are studying how to diagnose breast cancer through minimally invasive procedures and how groups can foster proper prevention behaviors among women.

Forex Trading For The New Currency Trader | All About Finance

Posted by Nelson Young on Rating 9.0 ?Outstanding

If you are completely new to the world of currency trading, then you are probably thinking that some tips on smarter currency trading will help you so that you can begin making better trades and bigger profits. Listed below are some tips to get you started with your currency trading endeavors.

There is a big difference between trading and gambling. You need to learn the warning signs of gambling before getting involved with the market so you will have a good idea of the signs to watch out for. If you can no longer control your trading, or are preoccupied with it, and it controls your moods, you may want to back off for a while.

Another good idea when using Forex is to invest according to your personality style. Some people are patient enough to sit for hours and wait for a price to fluctuate. Whereas others will be frustrated at mere minutes. Choose the one that fits your personality best.

You should pay attention to the risk inherent in the market you are considering entering. This risk can be assessed by using the leverage ratio: the higher this ratio is, the more money you are risking. A lower ratio means less potential profit, but safer investments and of course less stress.

When you start trading, only trade one currency pair. Once you become successful trading with that currency pair, start trading one more. Each currency pair trends a bit differently, so you will be successful if you learn one at a time. It is good to know several currency pairs though, in case your favorite slumps.

The best way to increase the amount of money you have in Forex trading is to earn it. Start with a small amount of money and then put your earnings back into it, building it into a sizable sum. That is the best way to start earning a real income to be proud of. It?s far better than borrowing money to invest ? you really should avoid that.

To stick to your trading strategy, eliminate emotions from the equation. It?s easy to get caught up in your investments, but no matter how you feel, you should follow the signals the market is giving you. If you don?t close out your position in time, it won?t take long for the market to turn against you.

A good way to learn valuable information about Forex is to subscribe to newsletters and online magazines dealing with the issues. You shouldn?t take this information as gospel and trade on a whim, but the more information the better, in terms of learning how the market works. Reading a few articles a day is a great way to become market savvy.

The most glamorous from of Forex trading is day trading. Before deciding if Forex day trading is for you, make sure you have enough funds to trade, a super fast computer, an Internet connection and the ability to monitor markets 24/7 (as they never stop). It?s also important to make sure you have the knowledge need to work in such a volatile, fast paced arena.

As stated before, trading in the foreign exchange market provides and interesting experience for many people, newcomers and experts alike. You can gain profit and knowledge by trading in the forex market. Using the advice from this article, you should have enough knowledge to get you started on the path to market success.
