MIAMI ? Forecasters say Maria has strengthened into a hurricane far from the U.S. and the storm is headed toward Newfoundland.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Thursday that Maria had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (121 kph). Its center was located about 205 miles (330 kilometers) north-northwest of Bermuda. Maria is moving north-northeast at 36 mph (58 kph).
A hurricane watch has been issued for part of the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. The center of Maria is expected to pass near or over the Avalon Peninsula on Friday.
