Chandler's Law creates a safer ATV experience for kids, teens ...

Posted on July 11th, 2011

Children who ride all terrain vehicles are on the road to a safer experience as the law that is intended to prevent ATV injuries, called Chandler?s Law, goes into effect in South Carolina July 1.

According to W. Scott Russell, M.D., FAAP, assistant professor, Pediatrics and medical director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, the law will help prevent injuries and save lives by requiring that children who ride ATVs receive training and education on how to control these mini-four wheel drive vehicles.

?I?ve seen a number of injuries to kids from innappropriate use of these vehicles, ? Dr. Russell said. Kids of all ages have typically ridden ATVs on uneven ground, or on highways and roads without a helmet, he said.
?We find that kids don?t often appreciate the speed of oncoming traffic when they are crossing highways and roads and this can cause traumatic and sometimes tragic incidents,? he said.

The law also requires all children over age six to wear helmets and safety glasses while riding their ATV. As in other sports, the use of helmets can help prevent a number of potential head injuries, including concussions, Dr. Russell said.

?Many ATVs are used in rural areas far from medical centers so it?s important people take these requirements seriously because there have been many cases where kids or teens have been injured but they cannot get prompt medical attention because they are hours away from the nearest emergency room,? Russell said.
