The Scripps Research investigators hope project will reveal suitable drug targets

JUPITER, FL, March 30, 2012 The National Institutes of Health has awarded The Scripps Research Institute $2 million to study the role of a pathway in the development and maintenance of B-cell lymphoma, a type of cancer that begins in immune system and turns normal disease fighting cells into cancers. The disease affects immune cells known as lymphocytes, which are part of our white blood cells.

John Cleveland, PhD, chair of the Department of Cancer Biology on the Scripps Florida campus, will be the principal investigator for the new five-year study.

B-cell lymphomas tend to occur in older patients and in those people whose immune system has been compromised. It is one of the most common blood cancers in the United States and kills about 20,000 Americans each year.

The new project will focus on the role of Myc oncoproteinsthe products of Myc oncogeneswhich are activated in over half of all human tumor types. Myc oncoproteins accelerate the rate of cell growth, which increases the risk of acquiring additional mutations that allow a premalignant cell to develop into a full-blown tumor. In this project, the Cleveland lab will investigate the role of a pathway that controls the destruction of a class of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) that encode proteins that regulate the development and maintenance of tumors.

"This grant allows us to focus on a new pathway that is controlled by Myc that we think is suitable to target for the development of new anti-cancer drugs," said Cleveland, who has led numerous studies shedding light on this oncogene. "We are very hopeful that learning more about this process will open the door for the development of new treatments."

Specifically, the new project aims to define the mechanisms by which Myc controls the expression and function of Tristetraprolin or TTP, a mRNA-binding protein that normally controls the destruction of a subset of important mRNAs. Importantly, Research Associate Robert Rounbehler, PhD, and other colleagues in the Cleveland lab have shown that TTP functions as a tumor suppressor that impairs the development and maintenance of B lymphoma. Their findings indicating that agents that regulate TTP or affect its key mRNA targets hold great promise as anti-cancer agents.

Headstone of Hitlers' parents' grave removed

Leonding Mayor Walter Brunner says Friday, March 30, 2012, that the tombstone marking the grave will be removed. Brunner says the decision was made by a relative of the family who says she does not want the grave to continue serving as a neo-Nazi pilgrimage site. (AP Photo, File) BLACK & WHITE ONLY

(AP) ? The tombstone marking the grave of Adolf Hitler's parents, a place of pilgrimage for neo-Nazis, has been removed from an upper Austrian village cemetery at the request of a descendant, and the grave is now available to receive new mortal remains, officials said Friday.

Walter Brunner, mayor of Leonding village, said the stone with the faded black and white portrait photos of Alois and Klara Hitler was taken down Wednesday. Village priest Kurt Pitterschatscher said the rented grave was ready for a new lease.

Asked whether he would have trouble persuading people to let their loved ones share a grave with the parents of a man whose name is a universal epitome of evil, Pitterschatscher said, "I really haven't thought about it."

Pitterschatscher said the black marble marker was removed without ceremony by a stonemason hired by the relative, described as an elderly female descendant of Alois Hitler's first wife, Anna. What's left at the site is a white gravel square and a tree.

He said he did not know the woman personally and did not identify her by name but cited her request for termination of the grave lease as saying she was too old to care for it and tired of it "being used for manifestations of sympathy" for Hitler.

Hitler's roots are in Braunau, near Leonding, which is commonly identified as his hometown after the village that he was born in was incorporated into Braunau in 1938. But he and his family moved to Leonding in 1898 when he was 9 and lived there until age 15.

Leonding itself first assumed cult status for his followers after Hitler visited his parents' grave and the nearby family house following the 1938 annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany.

The house now warehouses coffins for the cemetery, and Brunner said in a telephone interview that ? unlike the more than 100-year-old grave ? it did not draw Hitler fans.

Anti-extremist groups say neo-Nazis, sometimes coming in groups, placed flowers and Nazi symbols on the grave.

Robert Eiter, with the Upper Austrian Network Against Racism and Right-Extremism, said the latest incident was on All Saints day, Nov. 1, when an urn was left with the inscription "UnvergeSSlich" ? German for "unforgettable" and alluding to Hitler's SS shock troops.

"A lot of flowers and wreaths were deposited there from people who clearly were admirers," he said. "It had to do with the son and not the parents."

Brunner, the mayor, said he was "happy with the decision," and Eiter said most Leonding residents also supported it.

Austria has moved from its postwar portrayal of being Nazi Germany's first victim to acknowledging that it was Hitler's willing partner. Most young Austrians reject Nazi ideology and condemn the part their parents might have played in the Holocaust.

At the same time, the rightist-populist Freedom Party ? whose supporters range from those disillusioned with more traditional parties to Islamophobes and Holocaust-deniers ? has become Austria's second-strongest political force.

An Anti-Defamation League survey taken this year and published last week said that ? while remaining high ? anti-Semitic attitudes decreased from 30 percent to 28 percent in Austria last year compared to 2009.

Cuba: Freed agent on island to visit brother

(AP) ? A Cuban intelligence agent on probation after imprisonment in the United States arrived on Friday for a two-week visit to see his ailing brother in Cuba, where authorities consider him and four other agents national heroes.

Rene Gonzalez, one of the so-called Cuban Five spies arrested in 1998, flew to the island around noon for a "private family visit," according to an official note read on the news. It repeated his previous vows to return to the U.S. to serve out the rest of his probation.

"Our people welcome our beloved Rene to the country and will not cease in the struggle for his definitive return, along with his four dear brothers," a state newscaster said, reading from the official statement.

Cuba appeared set on downplaying Gonzalez's return, with no footage of an airport greeting or mass welcoming ceremony like the ones that greeted young raft survivor Elian Gonzalez ? no relation ? upon his return from Florida in 2000. Word of his arrival did not come until he was already here, and was the last item on the midday news.

The Cuban Five were convicted of spying on Cuban exiles in South Florida and trying to infiltrate military installations and political campaigns. Havana says they were only trying to keep tabs on violent exile groups who unleashed a bombing campaign on the island that killed an Italian tourist. The other four agents are still behind bars.

Rene Gonzalez was freed in October but was ordered to remain in the U.S. for three years under terms of his supervised release, a ruling that angered Cuban authorities.

But on March 19, U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard granted Gonzalez, a dual U.S.-Cuban citizen, permission for a two-week trip to see his brother, who is gravely ill with cancer.

Lenard ordered Gonzalez to give a detailed itinerary of the trip including addresses and phone numbers, and to remain in regular contact with his probation officer. He has two weeks from the date of his departure to return to Florida.

Philip Horowitz, Gonzalez's attorney in Miami, said his client does not want to do anything that could jeopardize the cases of the other Cuban Five or turn him into an international fugitive.

"He is going to follow that order to the letter," Horowitz said. "Like I said from the beginning, this has nothing to do with politics. It's a humanitarian visit."

Lenard's ruling came despite the U.S. Justice Department's objections that Gonzalez might have contact with Cuban intelligence agents and get new covert tasks to perform once he returned to the U.S.

Gonzalez's return could renew hope for Alan Gross, the U.S. government subcontractor serving 15 years in a Cuban prison.

Gross was sentenced under a Cuban statute governing crimes against the state after bringing restricted communications equipment onto the island. He says he was just helping the country's Jewish community improve its Internet connection, but Cuba contends the goals of the USAID program were ultimately aimed at overthrowing the government.

Though officials in Washington and Havana have repeatedly insisted that Gross and the Cuban Five are separate cases, some have expressed hope that a humanitarian swap might be arranged.

Gross' mother and daughter also have been fighting cancer, and he has asked to be allowed to travel to visit them. Like Gonzalez, he has promised to return.

KickStart Fitness and Nutrition: I Broke Up with my Scale (and you ...

I have a confession to make. I used to be addicted. I had to do it everyday. It took a while to finally break away from it, but when I did I felt so much better. And you should, too.

I broke up with my bathroom scale. It wasn't easy. I kept a close tab on the numbers- monitored my weight. It?made?me feel in control, but in reality I was truly a prisoner of the number. And while I go into the bathroom now and have to stare down the scale- trying to entice me, "Come on- step on me" - I know I made the right decision. My scale is now a shelf for all my reading materials at the moment- and it will probably remain that way for a long time. You see, I finally have a reality check with my body image. I realized that it's not your weight that is indicative of your health - it's your body fat percentage and how your jeans fit.

It's time to focus on the real numbers:

The truth behind health and fitness is not revealed in the number on the scale. This may give you a general idea of how large you are- but that's all it really is. An idea. It has added up everything in your body - organs, muscle, fat and all the water and food within your digestive system at that moment.?

If you really want to know if you're making strides in increasing muscle ( lean body mass), and losing fat, then the best method is to measure your body fat. And the best part is you don't have to do this everyday. If you don't believe me, I recommend searching online for fitness models and athletes (women whose body is around 8-15% body fat) and examine their weight and height. If they were non-athletic, we would say their weight was too high - but in reality, muscle is much more dense than fat, and therefore causes the scale to - in my terms- LIE. (By lie, I mean - lead us to believe our BMI is in the overweight to obese range).?

Taking your body fat measurements can be a fairly simple process. The options include, and are not limited to- having a personal trainer at a local gym test you, getting a BodPod done (these are a little costly, but very accurate), purchasing a caliper and/or BIA handheld device and do it yourself at home. There is a warning for trying to measure yourself at home- while the cheapest method, it can easily be done wrong. If you choose to go this route, be sure to PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Read up on how to accurately test yourself, and use the caliper on the same sites multiple times to get the most accurate reading.?

Here's a great link to help you calculate body fat based on several body sites:

Santorum Makes Inroads Into Romney Territory in Big Louisiana Win

Rick Santorum's convincing win in Saturday's Louisiana Republican presidential primary was fueled by the same groups that have supported his candidacy in other contests -- but the state's more conservative and more religious GOP electorate also allowed Santorum to defeat Mitt Romney among the constituencies that have?gone for Romney in the past.

Exit polls show Santorum continuing to run well among the most conservative, less educated, lower- and middle-income voters that have propelled him to wins in other Southern and Midwestern states. His inroads into?some traditional Romney constituencies included first-time wins?among non-evangelical voters and voters who make more than $100,000 a year.

Santorum's campaign called his "bayou blowout"?a game-changer, asserting that?"this two-man race is just beginning." But Romney's delegate lead and the nature of the electorates in upcoming primaries make that unlikely.

Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, ran up huge margins among lower- and middle-income voters in Louisiana. He bested former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, 56 percent to 19 percent, among those voters making less than $50,000 a year, who made up slightly more than a quarter of the electorate. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, struggled among this group, finishing third, with 16 percent. Romney has only won low-income voters in a handful of states, including Illinois last week.

Among voters making between $50,000 and $100,000 a year, Santorum again won big, capturing 51 percent of the voters, to Romney's 26 percent. The winner of this bloc has captured most of the primaries thus far, though Santorum won this group in Ohio and Michigan, despite losing narrowly in both states to Romney.

But Santorum also won among those voters making more than $100,000 a year -- the first time in this nominating process that he has won among the more managerial wing of the party in states where entrance or exit polls were conducted. He took 42 percent of this group, compared to 34 percent for Romney, who had won higher-income voters in every state except South Carolina and Georgia, where Gingrich won handily.

Santorum continued to excel -- and Romney continued to struggle -- among the most conservative and most religious voters. Nearly half of voters on Saturday identified as "very conservative," and Santorum won 53 percent of them, to 23 percent for Romney and 18 percent for Gingrich. The only states in which Romney has won the most conservative voters are hardly GOP bastions: New Hampshire, Nevada, Arizona, Massachusetts and Virginia (where only Romney and Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, were on the ballot).

Santorum also won a majority of white evangelical or born-again Christians, beating Romney by 35 points among this group. But the two candidates also ran neck-and-neck among non-evangelical voters: Santorum won those who did not identify as white evangelicals by three percentage points, while Romney won by one among all non-evangelicals. Romney had won the non-evangelical vote in every state except Georgia, where Gingrich won in a landslide in his home state.

Louisiana Catholics, who accounted for more than a third of voters on Saturday, preferred Santorum over Romney, 46 percent to 30 percent. It was only the second time this cycle that Santorum, who is Catholic, has won among voters who say they share his faith -- though in other Southern states, Catholics made up such a small percentage of the electorate that exit poll results were not considered significant.

But Santorum continues to run stronger among Protestants -- particularly those who attend church more frequently -- than among Catholics. He defeated Romney, who is Mormon, by 28 points among Protestants on Saturday, and by 37 points among Protestants who attend services on a weekly basis.

Romney continues to enjoy an advantage in electability, but Santorum gained slightly on that question in Louisiana. A plurality of voters -- 38 percent -- said the most important candidate quality was the ability to defeat President Obama in the general election, and Romney won half of them, compared to just 30 percent for Santorum. Romney has won these voters in every state except South Carolina and Georgia, where Gingrich won them.

Asked which candidate was most likely to defeat Obama, voters were less decisive: 42 percent chose Romney, while 34 percent selected Santorum. That represents a slight drop for Romney. In Illinois last week, 60 percent of voters thought he was the most likely candidate to beat Obama, and Romney also performed better on this question on March 13 in Alabama (46 percent) and Mississippi (49 percent). In each of the March 13 Southern states, despite Santorum's wins there, voters thought Gingrich was just as likely as Santorum to defeat Obama.

Santorum's stronger performance in Louisiana is unlikely to alter the race significantly. Romney remains well ahead in the delegate race, and on April 3, when the next slate of primaries will be held, it will be outside the South in?Maryland, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. In Maryland and Wisconsin this week, automated-telephone polls -- which do not meet National Journal's standards for publication -- showed Romney well ahead of Santorum. Santorum is not even on the ballot in the District.

Edison Research conducted the Louisiana exit poll Saturday at polling places across the state for the National Election Pool, a consortium of news organizations. The Louisiana exit poll consists of interviews with 1,499 voters.

Ecommerce Online Solutions Good for New Net Marketers | The ...

It is not exactly a secret that only a strong ecommerce presence is able to make an internet business profit-making. Ecommerce online solutions lead the way to a newer and wider shopper base for both big companies and small-scale internet business owners. However, online marketing executives can also take advantage of the plentiful ecommerce online solutions now available.

What is the purpose of ecommerce internet solutions? Basically, these are numerous applications and systems that permit ecommerce website owners and internet marketing specialists to make business online and promote their web stores.

An especially basic example of an ecommerce internet solution is checkout cart software. Checkout cart essentially permits web visitors to choose and purchase products or services securely on the internet. Additionally, checkout cart software can be employed as a potent web selling tool. Other ecommerce online solutions are different search engine optimisation tools, net traffic analytics tools, social marketing software and so on .

As an internet business owner or a new web marketer, one of the hardest tasks is to work out which ecommerce online solutions to employ. In case the website you?ll be promoting is already running, you?ll have to choose between many ecommerce web solutions ? from tools for greater internet exposure to applications for e-mail selling. How can you choose between the numerous products you may be offered? Here are several tips:

- Opt for ecommerce online solutions with proved record of success. Despite the fact that there are plenty of excellent new ecommerce online tools you should always go for products and/or services which benefit from an established record. Find out how long the product/service has been on the market, was it helpful for other businesses like the one you run and what the consumers? opinion is.

- Prefer ecommerce online solutions featuring training and support. Even if you?re an experienced net marketer you might find new software hard to use. That is why it is good to go for ecommerce products that are offered with appropriate training. It?s also a good idea to check what sort of support is included in the event you need any assistance during or after the training.

- Go only for ecommerce online solutions you actually need. The sheer quantity of services and products that will help your online shop turn into an increasing business begs the question: which ecommerce online solutions do I actually need? Plenty of the products you will be offered may offer pretty much the same services or there could be only unimportant differences between 2 software programs. When making your final choice, look for full scale ecommerce internet solutions which will help as many of your selling plan aspects as practical.

A good way to figure out what type of Ecommerce Online Solutions to use and how to choose between different applications is to try the book ?Ecommerce Online Store ? Everything You Need to Know About Selling Online? at http://www.amazon.com/Ecommerce-Online-Store-Everything-ebook/dp/B006Y2L0MU. It?s a helpful guide that provides detailed information and advice regarding the most vital sides of ecommerce and selling online . Does Online Advertising Really Work? | Business 2 Community

Does advertising on the internet really work??? We don?t need more hypey, bandwagon talk here.? We need the truth.

In talking to different business owners, there are some out there who doubt that it really works.

There are some who are old school (?we?ve always advertised in the yellow pages? or ?we rely on word of mouth? we don?t need to advertise on the internet!?) who feel that traditional ways of getting the word out about their company have worked just fine, thank you very much.

Necessity? The Father Of Opening Up Options?

Unfortunately for them, between the lousy economy (where word of mouth is no longer enough) and the non-use of yellow pages by most people these days, these folks are being forced to consider other avenues.

I have also spoken to those who have tried advertising on the internet and have concluded ?it doesn?t work!?

If you ask me, ?does online advertising really work?? you may be surprised by my answer.

My answer is? it depends.? From what I?ve seen, it depends on where you do it? and how you do it.

Let me explain.

Ways Internet Advertising Sometimes Does NOT Work

One of the times where I have NOT seen internet advertising work is? advertising in the wrong place.? That is the focus on this blog post.? In my next blog post, I?ll focus on another reason you have little success when you advertise online (how you advertise).

There are many different places you can advertise online?the search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing), on websites, on Facebook, Linked In, and many other places.

Two Basic Places To Advertise

For this discussion, let?s focus on two basic places most businesses advertise online.? I will even limit the discussion to one main platform ? Google.

Google has two basic places you can advertise?

A.? On the search network (where people are looking for your products and services by entering keywords and ?Googling? something), and
B.?On the display network (those little ads and banners that show up on some websites).

A Huge Difference Between Places

The difference between these two areas is that the first category is full of people actively searching for solutions to their problems? which means your products and services.? Got a roof leak? You go online and figure out who to call.

The second area is called ?interruption marketing? because you are advertising to people on websites who are not looking for you at all.? They are doing something else?reading content on a web page.? You try to get their attention so they might consider your product or service.

This type of advertising works reasonably well if you are trying to reach a particular group of people.? For example, if you sell things to dentists, they don?t always search for dental things.? But, if you know where they hang out online (certain websites they visit), you can advertise directly to them there.

Don?t Make This Mistake? And Burn Through Your Cash!

Where internet advertising does NOT work (or at least is cost effective) as a general rule (yes Virginia, there are exceptions), is when a company advertises on general websites (for example, CNN), without trying to target certain websites that cater to certain group of people (dentists, automotive executives, small business owners, moms with young kids, etc.).

However, if you have a product that has impulse appeal (EX: Lose weight), you can do alright.? But, if you are a plumber, people won?t give your ad a second thought.

Unless you have deep pockets and are intent on ?branding? your business (getting general exposure so as to become memorable when they do need you), you must match who you are trying to reach with sites that cater to those folks.

Soccer Lapel Pins Make Their Mark at Games and Tournaments

Soccer lapel pins are attractive and versatile.? They have a number of different uses both on and off the field.? In addition to identifying players from a certain team or region, they also are used to foster pride among teammates and in the sport itself. ?Soccer players wear their custom lapel pins on a shirt or attach it to a hat or bag for others to see.

Custom trading pins for soccer players are perfect for games and tournaments.? Not only do they allow teams to meet other athletes, they also give spectators the opportunity to mingle with their favorite players.? Pin trading is well received in every sport and soccer is no different.?

The highlight of many competitive events is the time set up for pin trading.? People flock to tented areas to show off their collections, negotiate trades, and come home with a few new pins to show off to their family members and friends.? These items are stored in pin bags, on lanyards or in their own boxes and cases.? This lets others see the collection but prevents the pins from being damaged from handling.

Soccer pins usually feature an image of a soccer ball or a photo of a goalie.? Many include player names and numbers as a way of appealing to a larger crowd of people.? The team?s name is included in the pin?s design as well as the location that the players come from.? This makes the pins a special and meaningful souvenir.

Don?t let another season pass you by without ordering your team custom lapel pins.? Visit http://www.lapelpinsrus.com today to request a free price quote and full color digital proof.? Former Google employee states why he now likes Microsoft

Earlier this month, former Microsoft and Google employee James Whittaker made waves on the Internet when he revealed why he left Google suddenly to rejoin Microsoft. Writing on his blog site, he stated that in his opinion, Google had changed in the time he worked there from a company dedicated to innovation to "an advertising company with a single corporate-mandated focus."

Now Whittaker has written yet another blog post that is basically the opposite side of his journey; namely, why he decided to rejoin Microsoft, this time as a web futurist.

So why come back to a big company like Microsoft, when a smaller organization could possibly be a bigger fit? Whittaker states that one of the reasons is having lots of talented people. He states:

The talent at big companies is abundant. That reason alone should explain anyone's choice?to work for any big company. Who doesn't want to be surrounded by smart people all day? That's why startups work so hard to hire big company talent away. That's why big companies create tugs-of-war over top performers, because they all have them.

He also says that big companies can have the scale to work on big problems and the reach to offer products across the globe.

Whittaker feels that Microsoft is making strides to use its talent, scale and reach " ... to be a disruptor. They aren't beholden to revenue streams or walled gardens. They stand to benefit the most from such a disruption."

While Whittaker says that not everything about Microsoft is perfect (meetings at the company can be too long and are held too often, according to him), he does see a number of changes at the company compared when he worked there last time. He states:

When I joined in 2006 the company was centered around Windows and Office. Today there is a new main street in Redmond and it houses the studios, not offices but studios, of the Xbox team. This change is more than symbolic. Windows and Office, far from sacrificial lambs, have clearly undergone some sort of genetic re-engineering. I have yet to fully grasp what they have done and how they have done it but their mojo is undeniable.

Why WikiLeaks' bid for radical transparency failed

Friday, March 23, 2012

The scale and significance of the 2010 WikiLeaks disclosures were overstated, according to new research. Analysis of the WikiLeaks debacle in the International Review of Administrative Sciences, published by SAGE on behalf of the Institute for Administrative Sciences (IIAS), serves to highlight four key reasons why radical transparency is hard to achieve, and why a technological fix alone will not achieve it.

Some regard the WikiLeaks disclosures of 2010 as evidence that conventional mechanisms for controlling government-held information are breaking down, heralding a new world of 'radical transparency'. However, Alasdair Roberts of Suffolk University Law School, Boston USA, argues that claims that old-style secrecy is over are an illusion, and that Wikileaks' advocates have overstated their scale and significance.

"They also overlook many ways in which the simple logic of radical transparency ? leak, publish, and wait for the inevitable outrage ?can be defeated in practice," Roberts says.

WikiLeaks' aim is to challenge 'increasing authoritarian tendencies' in government and the growth of unaccountable corporate power. By the end of 2010, WikiLeaks and its editor in chief and founder, Julian Assange, were in the eye of a media storm, with few doubting the significance of the extensive leaked material. Yet Roberts suggests that the 2010 leaks actually revealed the obstacles to achievement of increased transparency, even in the digital age.

The leaks' sheer size in terms of volume of pages was cited as proof of their significance - these were the largest set of confidential documents ever leaked to the public. Yet in quantitative terms, the data's significance as a fraction of the total number of confidential documents is no greater than previous leaks during other eras. The sheer quantity of this type of data held by governments is constantly increasing.

On the Internet, commercial and political considerations compromise the free flow of information, just as they did when we relied on earlier communications technologies. When WikiLeaks released US State Department cables in November 2010, several companies that Wikileaks used, including Amazon Web Services, EveryDNS.net, PayPal and Apple, cut off their services, citing contractual violations or threats to their own businesses that would hinder other customers. This complicated WikiLeaks' ability to distribute leaked information, and damaged it financially.

The radical transparency vision has a further difficulty, in that it neglects the significance of intermediation ? organizing, interpreting, and drawing attention to information. Skilled in the use of information technology, WikiLeaks' members were nonetheless daunted by the task of handling bulk data leaked from the Defence Department. WikiLeaks released a series of US military counterinsurgency manuals in 2008, anticipating a strong reaction and press attention. In reality it garnered little reaction because the material was too complex, and there was no clear story to grasp.

Wikileaks subsequently turned to a number of major media outlets to help with handling information releases. However, this also meant that the media became gatekeepers for the information, taking their own decisions regarding which content should be published, and what was newsworthy or what they had the budget to investigate.

Wikileaks expected its leaks to spark outrage, shifting public opinion. But the American public, in general, did not react with the expected level of outrage: perceptions about the conduct of the war in Afghanistan actually improved after WikiLeaks' July 2010 disclosures.

Roberts observes that: "The incidents revealed by WikiLeaks might not even be construed as abuses of power at all. On the contrary, they might provide reassurance that the American government is willing to act ruthlessly in the pursuit of American interests, and that it actually has the capacity to act ruthlessly."

The final difficulty with the vision of radical transparency is that it assumes a passive government reaction. In fact, governments have shown they can respond to such threats with "speed and brutality". US Army private Bradley Manning, the apparent source of all four of the 2010 leaks, has taken the hardest fall. US federal agencies have responded to the leaks by tightening administrative controls on access to sensitive information. Even if government officials lost control of the information itself, they have not lost their capacity to shape its interpretation.

"There is no such thing, even in the age of the Internet, as the instantaneous and complete revelation of the truth. In its undigested form, information has no transformative power at all," Roberts says. "Raw data must be distilled; the attention of a distracted audience must be captured; and that audience must accept the message that is put before it."

Roberts is a proponent of stronger accountability and increased transparency, for diplomatic and national security institutions. However, he concludes that this will require hard work, rather than a technological fix. "A major difficulty with the WikiLeaks project is that it may delude us into believing otherwise," he concludes.

What I'm Reading ? Making A Home And Family

A few weeks ago, I ordered a bunch of books from the library and they just happened to come in at the same time as my Amazon order.? I kept my audio book and started digging into my Amazon pile!

I am currently reading Beyond the Sling by Mayim Bialik, PhD.? I have always loved Mayim, and it all started with Blossom of course.? I even wore a denim hat with a huge flower on it so I could be like her.? Anyway, I will stop embarrassing myself now.? I am really loving this book though!? It?s an excellent combination of explaining Attachment Parenting, how she parents, and why she chooses to parent that way based on her neuroscience degree.? She talks about how our bodies and brains (and of course our children?s) react when we breastfeed, touch, cuddle with, and speak compassionately to them. I am looking forward to reading more of it ? hopefully today with some tea.

Love. Love. Love.

The other book I kept from the library, isn?t actually a text book but an audio book.? It was recommended to me by many people, and the audio came especially recommended.? If you drive often to and from work or a regular commute (mine isn?t regular, but I listen on my long trips to town), I highly recommend the audio of The Help!? There?s always the regular book too, but the audio has the amazing voices that brings the story right to life in your car.? It is set in the 1960?s and tells the story of two black maids and the racism they face working for white families.

What are you reading?? What do you recommend?? Leave me a comment and tell me!

Home Instead Senior Care Burbank: Health 411: Aging mom may ...

My 82-year-old mother has been accusing family members of spying on her, listening in on her phone conversations and entering her home when she's not there, among other things, off and on for about 10 years. She told her doctor she won't talk with us. Is there anything we can do? Are there resources and/or free counseling services to help us work out issues with our mom so we can talk with her doctor?

You can try to contact your mom's doctor to discuss her condition, particularly given that you're concerned she may be suffering from dementia and unable to properly care for herself.

In some states, doctors will talk to a family member about a person's condition even without a legal release, says Garvin Reiter, a certified elder law attorney in Portland, Ore., and a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. That's especially true if it is suspected or known that the patient is suffering from dementia.

But if the doctor is aware of a rift in the family, you're unlikely to get through, Reiter says. "They will definitely put up firewalls," he said. In that case, you'd need legal documents to gain access.

When it comes to planning for situations like these, you'll need four legal documents to be fully prepared, said Kathleen Kelly, executive director of the National Center on Caregiving in San Francisco.

The first document is a trust. This allows a family member or friend to manage a person's assets.

The second is a durable power of attorney for finances, which grants someone authority to make financial decisions on another person's behalf.

To make decisions about someone's medical care, you'll need a separate durable power of attorney for health. Finally, an advance healthcare directive allows someone to specify their wishes so they can maintain control over the type of treatment they do ? or do not ? receive. An advance healthcare directive may also designate a person to communicate those wishes on their behalf when they are unable to do so.

"Having all of those documents together is the biggest gift a person could [give] their family and friends," Kelly says.

Although it sounds like your mom may be tough to reason with, don't assume that setting up a power of attorney for health, which would give you access to her doctors, is out of the question, Reiter says. Dementia is progressive in nature. Until it reaches a stage where all cognitive function is lost, there are moments, albeit decreasing in frequency, when an individual retains the ability to reason. Depending on the stage of her dementia, you may be able to catch your mom at a time when she is lucid and clear-thinking.

To get the necessary legal papers in place, you'll have to demonstrate that she has transactional competency, meaning your mom understands the transaction in front of her at that moment she's carrying it out, Reiter says.

An attorney can help establish your mom's competency and get the legal papers in order. Since laws vary greatly by state, it's a good idea to work with a local attorney with experience in elder law. You can find one in the online directory of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys at?http://www.naela.org. You can also search for attorneys with experience in this area on the National Elder Law Foundation's website. Go to?http://www.nelf.org, click on "About NELF" and enter your state under the heading "Finding a CELA."

But first, you'll need a physician to determine that your mom is incapacitated, Clingman says. Then an independent lawyer will be appointed to represent her interests. Finally, a judge will decide whether to make you her guardian. Keep in mind that this can be an onerous and expensive process. "Guardianship is a last resort," Clingman, says.

There are a number of places you can turn to for assistance in these matters.

Geriatric case managers, who plan and coordinate care for the elderly and disabled, can be very helpful in identifying and navigating the range of needed resources. You can find one through the Assn. of Certified Geriatric Care Managers by visiting?http://www.caremanager.org?and looking under the "About Care Management" tab.

For information about healthcare documents, estate planning and more, try Help4srs.org, operated by the Torrance-based nonprofit Healthcare and Elder Law Programs Corp.

Services can also be located through the Family Care Navigator on the Family Caregiver Alliance's website, http://www.caregiver.org.

All states have an agency on aging, and the federal Department of Health and Human Services offers an Eldercare Locator at?http://www.eldercare.gov?to connect families to services for older adults. The department can also be reached at (800) 677-1116.
