The Pepperdine Graphic ? Plethora of fitness classes keeps ...

Pepperdine is notorious for housing some of the most physically fit, in-shape students in the country. But students boasting six-packs don?t only bank on healthy eating habits and countless stairs, they also keep their figures gorgeous by participating in group fitness classes organized by Campus Recreation. From the upbeat dances in Zumba class to the rejuvenation of yoga, students report being extremely satisfied with the group fitness offerings on campus. There?s nearly always a class in session, with up to seven separate classes a day. Classes cost $5 each or $60 for the entire semester, and students can even pay via their student accounts. Since it?s the beginning of the semester, now is the perfect time to head down to the fitness center ? behind the tennis court pavilion ? to sign up for a semester pass.
Those searching for a calm mind and body should try one of the esteemed yoga classes offered. But, when it comes to yoga classes, remember to choose wisely. Candlelight yoga, which features soothing music and lit candles, is ideal for beginners; the poses are not terribly difficult. Hatha yoga focuses on strength and flexibility, power flow yoga is a challenging course for those of increased flexibility, and vinyasa flow?yoga focuses mainly on controlling one?s breath and movement. Hatha, power flow, and vinyasa flow yoga can be a bit more difficult than candlelight yoga, so be cautious. Yoga is growing in popularity all over the country, and we?re lucky to have four separate class types here on campus. Try all four to pick a favorite.

Going to a new fitness class alone can be intimidating, and many people choose to go with friends. Zumba dancing, Aqua Fitness, and Cardio Dance & Sculpt are ideal for groups since they?re light and not too challenging. Zumba dancing, which combines Latin tunes with easy-to-follow dance moves, is open to both the beginner and expert dancer. Aqua Fitness takes place in the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool, and it?s a great way to cross train for other sports. Cardio Dance & Sculpt incorporates numerous global dance styles and strength training intervals to create a very unique class. These three classes can serve as the perfect medicine to clear a stressful mind, and there?s nothing better than disguising a body workout by having fun with friends.
Students looking for a tough class to whip themselves into shape are in luck, seeing as that is the goal of the remainder of the offered classes. Crunch, which lasts less than 30 minutes, focuses on strengthening the abdominal region of the body. It?s quick, effective and incredibly challenging. Another class, known as Shred, will keep all its participants guessing what will come next. The class incorporates strengthening dumbbells, weight bars, resistance bands, partner work and stability balls to give students a workout they?ll never forget. Cycle class is one of the most intense classes. It focuses on hills, resistance and varying speeds. But come early, this class fills up to capacity fast. Cardio kickboxing, another tough class offered, is the ideal way to release tension. Kicking and punching out all that built-up frustration about upcoming midterms? Yes, please.
Campus Rec offers two specialty classes: Recreational Ballet and Aikido. Both classes require a slightly more expensive payment, but they?re well worth it. Aikido is a Japanese martial art that teaches self-defense. The instructor, Mick Chambers Sensei, is a fifth-degree black belt, meaning students learn from the best. Recreational Ballet is open to beginner and advanced dancers, and the class is designed to build confidence and concentration.
The fitness schedule has a class for just about everybody. Whether you?re looking for a laid-back stress reliever or a heart pumping weight manager, you?re in luck. The instructors are all highly trained to give you the most effective workout possible. We?re lucky to have such a program, and students should take advantage of this opportunity. Head to the pavilion, buy a pass and let?s maintain that wonderful rep of having America?s hottest bods!
