Man's Video Gaming Prompts Wife To Petition For Divorce - Kotaku

A young Chinese man in Sichuan province is in a little hot water with his wife and the courts because of his affinity for video games. The man, Zhang Ping, is being taken to court by his wife for neglecting his household chores in order to play online games, reports News Guangdong.com.

25 year-old Zhang Ping married his college sweet heart, Wang Juan, in 2011. The two enjoyed a short period of marital bliss before everything started to go wrong. Originally, Zhang was a "model husband;" after returning home from work, Zhang would help Wang with the household chores.

Late last year, Zhang started to change. According to Wang, Zhang became lazy. Instead of helping his wife around the house, Zhang began laying around playing video games. Whenever Wang asked Zhang for help with anything, his reply was to blow her off. Help make dinner, "the weather is too hot, let's go out and eat." Help clean the floor, "why bother? The floor is clean." Zhang's favorite excuse to use was this one: "I work all day, my work is boring, I need to relax. Video games excite me, it helps me relax".

Zhang's reluctance to do any house work caused a lot of grief between the couple. Wang says the couple would fight and argue all the time because of Zhang's attitude. When it got too much for her, she decided to petition the courts for a divorce from her husband.

Wang's petition cites Zhang lacks responsibility, and that he is an overly selfish man with an attitude problem.

At the court hearing, Zhang said he doesn't agree with his wife's request for divorce and is willing to work things out. Unfortunately for Wang, the courts also didn't agree. The judge asked the two to work together to reach a mutual understanding.

After listening to the judge, Wang agreed to drop the lawsuit against her husband.

Obama calls Oklahoma tornado's toll 'hard to comprehend'

MOORE, Oklahoma (Reuters) - Standing by a pile of debris that once was an elementary school, President Barack Obama on Sunday called the destruction last week's tornado wrought in Moore, Oklahoma, "hard to comprehend" and vowed to provide long-term federal help in rebuilding.

The tornado, rated at the top of a five-step scale used to measure the destructive power of twisters, killed 24 people - including seven children at the school site Obama visited. It ripped a 17-mile-long (27-km-long) corridor of destruction through the suburb of Oklahoma City, flattening entire blocks of homes, two schools and a hospital.

"Obviously the damage here is pretty hard to comprehend," Obama said, standing on a block where piles of boards, bricks and cinder blocks that used to be buildings and houses lined the side of the street. Rare items that survived the disaster - a television set, a pink baby carriage - stood in contrast to the wreckage.

The visit to the disaster-shaken town was one in a series of responses Obama has made in recent months to tragedies including the Boston Marathon bombings last month; a December mass school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut; and the destruction that Superstorm Sandy caused along the Jersey Shore in October.

"Whenever I come to an area that has been devastated by some natural disaster like this, I want to make sure that everyone understands that I am speaking on behalf of the entire country," said Obama, flanked by officials including Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin. "Everywhere, fellow Americans are praying with you, they're thinking about you and they want to help. And I'm just a messenger here letting you know that you are not alone."

Cars with their bodies dented and windows smashed lay under debris or twisted on their sides. Rising above the wasteland were at least three American flags that had been attached to the rubble, waving in the wind.

Caleb Sloan, 24, who lost his home in the storm, said Obama's words gave him hope that help would be forthcoming.

"He has no choice but to live by his word," Sloan said. "I hope and pray and think he will keep his promises."

SPATE OF STORMS

The May 20 Moore tornado was the most powerful of a spate of 76 twisters that touched down in 10 states from May 18 through 20, causing an estimated $2 billion to $5 billion in insured losses, according to disaster modeling company Eqecat.

The Moore tornado, the deadliest such windstorm to hit the United States in two years, also injured 377 people.

One volunteer who had been working on the response raised the commonly voiced complaint that the tight security surrounding a presidential visit can interfere with efforts to return to normal.

"It is fantastic he came, but his visit shut down everything," said Carol Hull, who has been working to feed and counsel victims. "We have no place to send people for food and aid while he is here because the roads and centers are shut down."

While assuring that residents of the 1,200 homes that the storm destroyed would receive extended federal help, Obama also urged lawmakers to maintain funding for the training and equipment that emergency responders rely on in the aftermath of disasters.

"I know everybody in Congress cares deeply about what's happening and know that resources will be forthcoming when it comes to rebuilding," Obama said. "But remember that it's also the ongoing training and equipment, making sure those things are in place. We can't shortchange that kind of ongoing disaster response, we can't just wait until the disaster happens. That's how, in part, we're able to save a lot of lives."

Century High students create FAME Night celebrating senior art and ...

Century High School senior Madeline Watkins stood in front of her classmates, holding up a poster of a clinched fist behind red-orange flames, the words "Catching Fire" across the top.

The expression wasn't borrowed from a novel in the Hunger Games saga. Seniors in Century's Fine Arts and Media Entertainment class (FAME) chose the title for their senior art showcase tonight because it represents the desire they have to pursue their artistic passions after they graduate in June.

FAME Night, a compilation of senior projects ranging from visual arts to theater, music and media, is planned entirely by students, the final piece of the senior portfolio required of all seniors in public high schools in Oregon. These portfolios are created in a focused program or senior seminar.

Century students have a variety of seminars they can choose from, depending on their career interests: health services, business and marketing, culinary arts and hospitality, early childhood education, human resources, technology or FAME, a program that combines humanities with an artistic focus.

Watkins, along with 60 other seniors, chose FAME because she believes art will play a role in her future career -- right now, she wants to be an art teacher or art-based therapist. She can't remember a time when she didn't love to draw. With the exception of economics, all the classes she's taking this semester are art related.

The workload for FAME hasn't been easy, according to Watkins, who helped design the FAME Night poster and also completed a series of paintings inspired by dancers in movement for her portfolio.

"With homework for some classes you know the answers are right or wrong," Watkins said. "It's not the same for art. With art, it's up to me when it's completed. When I create something, it's important that I'm inspired. I'd rather stay up the night before and be inspired than do it over a week without any inspiration."

Chaz Stobbs, 17, who specializes in 2-dimensional art, was in charge of creating banners and wooden flats for the FAME Night.

He said he has always been determined to go to art school and will begin classes at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in the fall. His dream is to make books and magazines, maybe even doing graphic design work for bands.

"I tend to stay as far away from normal as possible, not on purpose, though," Stobbs said. "I like doing what feels good, and I'm happier when I'm creating art that I can be proud of."

Kyla Mazhary-Clark didn't anticipate choosing art for her senior seminar when she first started at Century, but when she enrolled in a broadcast journalism class her freshman year, something clicked.

"Could this be my job someday?" Mazhary-Clark remembers asking herself. "I know that it's hard to get into film school, but it's what I really love. I want a job that I will enjoy going to every day."

For her portfolio piece, she created a promotional video for the Hillsboro School District showing the effects of recycling on the environment. Her film will be played to faculty and staff at the schools in the Hillsboro School District teaching them about the districts' new method of recycling.

For FAME Night, Mazhary-Clark directed a video promoting the event.

"Directing it was like herding cats," Mazhary-Clark laughed. "Everyone has their own opinions about how something should look."

But she said it was good preparation for her future. She wants to be a film director someday and will be attending California State University in Long Beach, where she hopes being close to the film industry will provide her with good connections.

FAME co-teacher Lydia Laurence, who has been teaching language arts at Century for 14 years, said FAME Night will be a chance for the community to celebrate the students success, simulating a real gallery opening.

"The students work really hard at this," Laurence said. "They need to learn how to self promote and what it takes to put on an event. They need to be leaders, and it's great to be able to watch them do this in the class and in the community. "

?Last year, for me, was a learning year, and that?s something I?m looking to build on,?? Quick said.? ?It?s a big step, coming to the NFL because everything at this level, physically and mentally, is so much faster.? You have to adjust, but you can?t force it.

?But now, after that first year, I really feel like I have a better feel for the offense and my role here.? I?m ready to take my game to the next level.??

Pead has a better chance to make an impact, given that Steven Jackson is gone and the Rams didn?t replace him with a veteran.

?We?re all competitors and we?re all looking to be No. 1,?? Pead said.? ?But it?s not like we?re enemies.? We?re truly a unit, trying to do everything we can to make sure that we?re all getting better, as individuals and as a group.??

For Quick, having rookies Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey around could cut into the total opportunities, but it also could make it easier for Quick to get open since the much-hyped youngsters will be getting more attention.

Regardless, the team that was viewed as having a great draft in 2012 needs a strong contribution from a pair of second-round picks who haven?t contributed much so far.

S.Africa's Famous Brands FY earnings up 22 pct

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African fast-food company Famous Brands reported a 22 percent increase in full-year earnings on Monday, helped by solid sales growth and an increase in new stores.

Headline earnings for the year to end-February came in at 339 cents per share versus 278 cents a year earlier.

Famous Brands holds the franchise rights to some of South Africa's best known fast-food outlets and despite the subdued macro-economic climate has grown its business to 1,764 restaurants and plans to expand in the UK and India.

A total of 140 new restaurants were opened in the year, with 110 of these in South Africa.

Chief Executive Kevin Hedderwick said it is launching its Steers brand in the UK and opening a Debonairs Pizza restaurant in Mumbai in July.

A final dividend of 142 cents was declared, bringing the total dividend to 250 cents a share, an increase of 25 percent on the previous year.

Shares of Famous Brands closed at 94 rand on Friday, a year high for the stock that has traded as low as 69.50 rand this year.
