Disappointing to say the least, but I can?t blame him for shirking the issue. ?He?s got a job and project to protect. It?s definitely not an easy question to answer, because the implications are harsh. However, before we go down the dreaded ?Bioware hates gays? path or the ?lazy development? path, let?s take off our rainbow colored glasses and get down to the nitty gritty.

First, we?ll start out by making a couple of logical assumptions about TOR.

1. In his post, Beau is quick to point out that there won?t be any hardcore sex in the game and I feel he?s spot on. ?Yes, we can have ?relationships? with opposite-sex companions in TOR, but if you think Bioware is going anywhere but the PG (Golly. 3. Surely there will be some suggestive themes, crude humor, and perhaps even some simulated gambling. ?Again, nothing that we haven?t already seen in numerous MMORPGs before.

So what do all of these things point to? ?A ?Teen? rating from the ESRB.

Now this is important. ?Why? ?Because EA/Bioware/Lucasarts loves money. ?The Star Wars brand is a money making machine and a ?Teen? rating ensures that TOR reaches it?s largest potential audience.

This is also why they will not and cannot introduce same-sex relationships into The Old Republic.

Do you see where I?m going with this? ?If not, then I?m just going to lay it out for you plainly.

It?s my belief that EA/Bioware is afraid that the ESRB will slap the big ol? M rating on TOR if there is the possibility that the player can foster a gay/lesbian relationship with a virtual companion.

My bet is that gay, lesbian, or transgender characters in videogames are currently placed in the same category as your typical content descriptions for a Mature title (?intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content/and or strong language?). ?You?re not going to find that on the official ESRB website because that would be politically incorrect and an industry ?dirty little secret.?

It?s like that big elephant in the room. ?Everyone knows that it?s there, but they?re too embarrassed to talk about or address it.

What other reason would Bioware have to exclude same-sex options in TOR? ?Because of manpower? ?Please. ?It?s Bioware. ?They have the resources. ?Because of time constraints? ?Nope. They don?t seem to be in any rush to get this thing done. ?Because they suddenly turned their backs against the LGBT community? ?Very doubtful given their recent track record with games like Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2. ?Because Lucasarts said no? Possibly, but if they had a problem with it why didn?t they stop it in Knights of the Old Republic?

All signs point to the ESRB and EA/Bioware?s unwillingness to risk a Mature rating for one of the biggest MMORPG releases of all time.

I hope I?m wrong. ?I hope I?m just having a crazed conspiracy theory nut job moment, but something tells me that I?m not so far of base here.

LYNDON, Kan. (AP) ? A jury convicted a Kansas man of capital murder on Thursday in the shooting deaths of his estranged wife, their two teenage daughters and his wife's grandmother ? crimes his attorneys said he committed after his spouse took a lesbian lover and filed for divorce.

Attorneys for James Kraig Kahler had argued that his mental health deteriorated and he finally snapped because of his pending divorce and his wife's sexual relationship with another woman whom she met when they lived in Texas. But prosecutors painted a picture of man who coldly picked off his victims, one by one, at the home of his wife's grandmother, near Burlingame, a small town 20 miles south of Topeka, during the weekend after Thanksgiving 2009.

The Osage County jury needed only about two hours to reach a verdict. Kahler, dressed in a dark suit, stood calmly and showed no outward emotion as the bailiff announced the verdict. His parents, seated in the front row, also appeared calm.

Jurors will next hear additional evidence and consider whether to recommend a death sentence, weighing issues such as the cruelty involved in the shootings against Kahler's previous lack of a criminal record and his mental state at the time of the crimes.

Kahler, who goes by his middle name, Kraig, was convicted of four counts of first-degree murder as well as a single count of capital murder ? a charge that prosecutors could bring because Kansas law says multiple murders can qualify a defendant for the death penalty if they're part of "the same transaction" or "a common scheme." Kahler also was convicted of one count of aggravated burglary, with prosecutors contending he entered the grandmother's home without permission.

Kahler, 48, had directed city utility departments in Weatherford, Texas, and Columbia, Mo., but moved back to Kansas just weeks before the shootings to live with his parents. Witnesses testified that he lost the Missouri job after he became obsessed with keeping his marriage alive and that he believed his daughters had sided with his wife.

The victims were his wife, 44-year-old Karen Kahler; her grandmother, Dorothy Wight, 89; and the Kahlers' daughters, Emily, 18, and Lauren, 16.

Law enforcement officers and emergency medical personnel said that before dying, Wight and Lauren Kahler identified Kraig Kahler as the gunman. The Kahlers' son Sean, now 12, also testified that he saw his father shoot his mother before he escaped the scene without physical injury.

In closing arguments earlier Thursday, Assistant Attorney General Amy Hanley said Kahler was angry and gunned down his family members because he believed he could fix his problems by getting rid of those he felt were responsible.

"The defendant had a plan," Hanley told jurors. "In his mind he had a problem to eliminate, and he knew how to do it."

Defense attorney Thomas Haney said Kahler was mentally "broken" because of his wife's lesbian affair and her pursuit of a divorce.

"What happens when someone who's rigid is put under too much pressure?" Haney said, breaking a pencil in front of jurors. "They snap."

Kahler was a city utilities director in Weatherford, Texas, and Columbia, Mo., but moved back to Kansas shortly before the shootings to live with his parents outside Topeka.

According to trial testimony, his wife began having a sexual relationship with the other woman in Texas in 2008, before Kahler took the job in Missouri. His wife filed for divorce in January 2009, and witnesses said Kahler became so obsessed with his failing marriage that his work suffered and he lost his job.

Partners in a Kansas City, Mo., psychiatric office testified on opposite sides of the case about Kahler's mental health. One said Kahler was so severely depressed that he wasn't thinking rationally and couldn't control his behavior at the time of the killings. The other said Kahler's depression wasn't serious enough to prevent him from forming the intent to kill or making conscious decisions about what he did.

Kansas law says a mentally ill defendant still is legally responsible for a crime, unless his illness or mental defect prevented him forming an intent to commit the crime and, in the case of capital or first-degree murder, acting with premeditation.

As of Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at least 1,634 members of the U.S. military have died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count.

The AP count is one less than the Defense Department?s tally, last updated Tuesday at 10 a.m. EDT.

At least 1,362 military service members have died in Afghanistan as a result of hostile action, according to the military?s numbers.

Outside of Afghanistan, the department reports at least 100 more members of the U.S. military have died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, 11 resulted from hostile action. The Defense Department also counts two military civilian deaths.

The AP count of total OEF casualties outside of Afghanistan is two fewer than the department?s tally.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 13,447 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department.

Libya: Obama Briefed On Tripoli Fighting

VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. ? A vacationing President Barack Obama is being kept up to date by aides on developments in Libya and U.S. officials are in touch with their contacts in that country to determine the progress of rebel troops advancing on Libya's capital, Tripoli.

A senior administration official said the president was briefed during the day Saturday on Martha's Vineyard, Mass., and would continue to get regular updates, including through the night if necessary. A second senior official said the administration was in close contact with the Libyan opposition and U.S. allies and partners, and believes that Moammar Gadhafi's days in power are numbered.

It is unclear to some U.S. analysts, however, whether these latest developments translate to a tipping point.

Analysts have concluded that Gadhafi's well-known mercurial decision-making style means he could decide within hours to flee, or stay to the bitter end.

If Gadhafi flees or is otherwise deposed, the administration plans to voice the support of the U.S. and its partners in the international community for the opposition and assist it as the country makes a transition to democracy, officials say. But the administration will also continue to stress that this is a matter for the Libyan people to decide.

The officials, both with the White House and with other agencies, spoke anonymously to discuss sensitive diplomatic matters.

Reporters in Tripoli heard gunfire and explosions after rebel troops seized control of Zawiya, a major coastal city not far from the capital. Rebel leaders called it the start of an attack on Gadhafi's main stronghold.

Obama spent most of Saturday at his vacation compound on this island off Cape Cod. He dropped in briefly at a reception hosted by his friend and former law school professor, Charles Ogletree, but was back at the complex in just over an hour.

While their initial reason was to update the appearance of their kitchen, the couple realized that replacing the aged appliances would have a big energy-saving benefit. ?We bought all new energy-efficient appliances because we would save money in the long run. We watch our bills very closely. Plus, we wanted to do our part to reduce energy consumption,? Amy explains.

The Kellys would like to implement more energy-saving ideas and projects around the house that would make their home more energy efficient, but like most young homeowners, they?re on a tight budget. Luckily there are plenty of home improvement options to fit anyone?s budget?from free energy-saving tactics to more costly overhauls.

Lindsay Curren is co-founder of Transition Staunton Augusta, a Virginia chapter of Transition U.S., a nonprofit organization that supports building communities that are resilient to the challenges of peak oil and climate change. Curren knows that not every homeowner can afford costly energy-saving upgrades.

Think ?going green? must break the bank? Think again. Here are a few things you can do to improve your home?s energy usage that cost absolutely nothing.

• Close doors to unused rooms when heating or cooling your house.
• Pull blinds down during the summer and up in the winter to minimize or maximize solar gain.
• Turn off heating and cooling when you?re not at home.
• Turn down the thermostat ? ?We had a family meeting and decided that, for heating, no one is to set the thermostat above 68, and for cooling, no lower than 75,? Curren says.
• Dress appropriately: Don?t wear summer clothes during winter and crank up the heat to compensate.
• Line dry your clothes ? ?We line dry everything winter and summer,? says Curren.

[We also] installed weather stripping around our outside doors, and we bought ?draft doggies? in funky fabrics from a vendor on Etsy.com for under the interior doors.?
