Your Questions About Pets | The Pet Lovers Magazine

Sharon asks?

I rescued an Australian Shepard dog about 9 months old. He is a great dog but very needy and always needs to touch with his paws. He does not jump as much but always puts his paw on you and wants to be as close as possible.

I know nothing about his background just that he was left on the side of the road. He is great with kids and other dogs. I just need some training tips that will work on this not so puppy of a dog.
Thanks!

I would also like for him to become a therapy dog at my school. I also plan to introduce him to our horses. I know very little about this breed and would be grateful for some tips on training my older puppy.

Yvonne Ralph answers:

Aussies are sweet, loving dogs. You can teach him not to put his paw on you while still being affectionate with him; tell him no if it bugs you and remove the paw and pet him when he?s not pawing you. He?ll figure it out fast; Aussies are incredibly smart.

Start him in basic obedience training ? this will help your bond and maybe your trainer will know how to make your dream of having this dog as a therapy dog come true.

Your dog may try to herd the horses. Try to wear out him physically and mentally ? agility is awesome for Aussies ? and he may not do it as much. He will want to do SOMETHING, but he can be taught that horses aren?t for herding, even if it means you don?t run up to the horses with the Aussie.

He?ll still be a puppy; often rescued dogs go through a second puppyhood after finding their forever home. Enjoy it while it lasts ? it may be a year or two before he settles down!

Enjoy your fantastic new dog and congrats on him!
