Ex-Wipro executive Paranjpe to head US energy firm

Bangalore, May 26

Former Wipro joint chief executive Girish S. Paranjpe has been named the managing director of US-based Bloom Energy International, the energy firm said Thursday.

"Paranjpe, who will report to chief executive and co-founder K.R. Sridhar, will develop the global market for our products outside the US and focus on creating new solutions around our server and our flagship electrons offering," the company said in a statement.

The Silicon Valley-based Bloom Energy provides solid oxide fuel cell technology for generating clean, efficient power onsite from any fuel source. Its energy server produces power for many Fortune 500 firms, including Adobe, Caltech, eBay, FedEx, Google, Staples and Walmart.

Paranjpe will also lead an initiative to partner with energy industry innovators and infrastructure providers.

"We are at an inflection point. Having developed and proven the technology in California, it is time to expand our markets. Girish will help us in taking our technology to the global marketplace by building a strong worldwide organisation," Sridhar said.

During his two-decade long association with the global software major, Paranjpe led the strategy and operations of Wipro?s IT business, including services and products.

?The opportunity to work with Bloom will be exciting for multiple reasons. The company?s ability to generate clean, reliable and affordable base-load power is unique and its technology will have a profound impact on businesses and society,? Paranjpe pointed out.

Noting that developed and emerging countries were looking for breakthrough alternatives to fulfil growing electricity needs, Paranjpe said with Bloom at the cusp of a new beginning, there is an opportunity to do something significant, similar to what he did as part of the IT industry.

?Initially, we will enter a select few geographies, yet to be finalised, that have the following attributes: unmet customer needs, the right policy environment, support for the right infrastructure and strategic like-minded domestic partners. I look forward to introducing this innovative and sustainable energy solution to the rest of the world,? Paranjpe added.

Wipro?s former joint chief executive Suresh Vaswani, who quit the IT bellwether along with Paranjpe March 31, joined Dell India in April as chairman and executive vice president to spearhead the global computer maker?s applications and back office operations.

McGregor Threw Up Flying With Pilot Brother

just now | WENN | See recent WENN news ?

Scottish actor Ewan McGregor left a messy mark in his pilot brother Colin's Royal Air Force fighter plane after throwing up during a special flight.

The Star Wars star was recently treated to a thrilling tour of the skies aboard his older sibling's Tornado GR4, but McGregor reveals Colin didn't exactly take it easy on him.

He says, "My brother was really giving it (showing off). For the first 20 minutes (we were flying very fast and very low) and then he came back up and levelled off and at that point I just went white and just started to sweat. I really didn't want to be sick because it's embarrassing. I tried really hard not to, (but) I threw up."

NASA asteroid mission could explain how life began (and how ours might end)

There's a slight chance that the Earth could get hit by an asteroid in about 170 years, but don't you worry -- NASA's all over it. This week, the agency announced a new mouthful of a mission known as Origins-Spectral Interpretation-Resource Identification-Security-Regolith Explorer, or OSIRIS-REx, for short. The $800 million initiative, part of NASA's New Frontiers Program, will send a spacecraft to link up with 1999 RQ36 -- a nearby asteroid that's likely rich in carbon and other organic molecules that could explain how life forms originated. After about four years of space travel, the craft should get close enough to map the asteroid's surface, before using its robotic arm to extract at least two ounces of material and return it to Earth by 2023. Scientists will also pay close attention to something known as the Yarkovsky effect, which determines how an asteroid's path changes as it absorbs and emits energy from the sun. OSIRIS-REx will attempt to measure this affect for the first time, perhaps allowing NASA to predict the trajectories of potentially hazardous asteroids -- including the RQ36. The 1,900-foot wide rock is expected to approach Earth by the year 2182 and, according to recent estimates, there's a one in a thousand chance that it could actually strike our planet. Now if you excuse us, we have to go prepare a bunker for our great-great-grandchildren. Head past the break for a video and full press release.

Create Cheap Arduino-to-Android Wireless with a Magnetic Coil

[Photo: Joe Desbonnet]Have you ever wanted to find an inexpensive way of communicating with your Android phone wirelessly, but without relying on the likes of Bluetooth or Google ADK? If you also happen to be one of those people who has spare Arduino boards about, you're in luck. Joe Desbonnet combined an Arduino microcontroller with a magnetic coil to create what he calls the "Poor Man's NFC".

The hack allows for a one-direction, low-bandwidth connection between an Arduino board and Android phone (you'll need one that has an electronic compass). Using a one-meter-by-one-centimeter copper cable, the Android app Tricorder, and a 120-ohm resistor, Joe made a coil from all the copper wire, which then connected to the arduino via the resistor on one end. At this point a diode may come in useful to save the arduino from a possible EMK kick, but not essential.

Once locating the magnetometer on the phone and using Tricorder to do a little bit of coding, you would then attach the coil. To get data transfering at a decent rate, you'll need to do a little bit of signal bit banging and Android decodin. Once that's sorted, transfering with data rates of around 7bps is perfectly achievable.

Ok, it's a pretty basic wireless hack, and 7bps isn't a great data-transfer rate (needless to say), but it's a cool way of networking on the cheap, even if it's just for fun. Joe is still trying to tweak the project, so hopefully it will continue to improve. Check out the video below of the hack running smoothly or visit Joe's blog to get all the instructions, coding and explanatory graphs to try this for yourself.

Should Parents Use GPS Tracking On Their Kids? | Article Directory

Should parents track their kids with GPS? Some people may be shocked by the invasion of privacy that ?GPS parenting? presents, but the benefits of tracking kids with GPS may just outweigh the cons. Read on to learn about GPS tracking for kids and teens.

Know Where Your Child is at All Times

With the increased availability and technology of GPS tracking now so easily accessible ? why not use it to keep track of your child at all times? If your child is young enough to get lost or be abducted, it?s not an invasion of privacy it?s just common sense! A GPS tracker can be placed inconspicuously in your child?s backpack, jacket or pocket, so you can always know that your child is safe in school, has made it home safely from school, or is where they?re supposed to be.

Even the safest communities in the world can have kidnappers, or maybe your child just has a wandering eye. It?s very easy for a child to get distracted at the park or at a store and wander out of eyesight. With GPS tracking for your child you can easily find where your child is when you can?t see them.

Children with Special Needs

Another great benefit of GPS tracking for kids is to help care for children that have mental disabilities or behavioral problems such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). A child that has mental disabilities or behavioral issues may be more inclined to wander away from their guardian when they become distracted. Whether your child has ADD or Autism, a GPS tracking monitor can give you much needed peace of mind when he or she is not directly in your care.

Driving Teens

You may think once your child is old enough to not get lost you have less to worry about, but once they start driving you have a whole new set of things to worry about! With GPS or fleet tracking installed in the car your teen is driving, you can not only see where they are driving, but you can monitor how fast they are driving as well. While some parents might say installing a GPS monitoring device in your teen?s vehicle shows a total lack of trust, wouldn?t you rather them resent you a little but still be safe?

Research has shown that teenagers don?t drive safely for fear of crashing, but rather for fear of getting a ticket. If your teen knows you are monitoring where they are driving and how fast they are going via GPS tracking, they are less likely to take risks and likely to drive more safely.

Should Parents Track their Kids with GPS?

So should parents track their kids with GPS? As every parent knows, the safety of their children is always their largest concern. Because GPS tracking devices allow you to pinpoint the exact location of your child anytime and anywhere, the answer should be a no-brainer. GPS tracking for children has amazing benefits that no one can deny. Find a GPS personal tracking device to ensure your child?s safety today!
