Twitter bosses face grilling by MPs after vile rape threats by sick internet trolls

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee looks set to call chiefs at the micro-blogging site in the autumn to discuss their response to the torrent of abuse.

Committee chair John Whittingdale said MPs were likely to address the subject when they examine the issues surrounding child protection .

"I would have thought it very possible that the committee might want, in the course of our inquiry, to talk to Twitter," he said.

He spoke after Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy and campaigner Caroline Criado Perez held talks with bosses at the site last night to discuss the stream of vile tweets they received at the hands of internet "trolls".

Tory MP Claire Perry was attacked online for her stance on pornography while Labour MP Stella Creasy was targeted after defending a feminist campaigner who had suffered similar abuse.

Ms Creasy, 36, was subjected to threats of rape and death with one threat reading: ?I?m gonna follow you tomorrow and stab and twist so you bleed to death.?

The Walthamstow MP has reported the messages to police and vowed the ?morons? behind them will be brought to justice.

She added: ?This is not about Twitter, this is about hatred of women and hatred of women who speak up.

?Some of those people sending the messages have been absolutely explicit about that.?

Ms Creasy had been speaking out on behalf of Caroline Criado-Perez, 29, who was vilified by so-called ?trolls? on Twitter after leading a successful campaign to have a woman pictured on a new banknote.

Their plight comes after it emerged Ms Perry was also being targeted over her support of curbs on pornography.

Messages sent to the 49-year-old, a special adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron on child abuse on the web, included one that said she would be raped.

She said she had been tempted to shut down her account but ?that would be giving in?.

Ms Criado-Perez said last night that she felt ?under siege? by the trolls, adding: ?It has just been overwhelming, and has consumed my life both physically and emotionally.?

Yesterday an online petition calling for Twitter to introduce a more effective system for reporting abuse had attracted more than 62,000 signatures.

And last night the website said that it plans to include a button for reporting abuse within every tweet.

Panasonic GX7 specs and images leak, show tiltable EVF and 108060p video

Prolific leaker Digicame Info has just showed off new images of Panasonic's likely new 16-megapixel Lumix GX7, along with full specs that place it squarely in the high-end, if accurate. Those include a 2.76 million dot EVF that can be tilted 90 degrees, 1/8000th of a second shutter speed, and in-body image stabilization -- all of which exceed the company's $1,500 GH-3 flagship. Other features include a 25,600 max ISO, silent mode shooting, NFC, WiFi, focus peaking, an 80-degree tiltable LCD and full HD, 60 fps video. If 43 Rumors is to be believed, all of that will cost around 1,000 in Europe for the body only (around $1,325). There's no word on an official arrival yet, but if you're in the market for a GH-3 and were hoping for something lighter (and cheaper), you may want to hang on. Head after the break to see the tilt EVF, or check the source for more pics.

India's Congress Party agrees to create new state in south

By Sanjeev Miglani

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's ruling Congress party approved on Tuesday the creation of a new southern state, a move that has revived deep political divisions and raised fears of violence in the area, home to global firms including Google.

The decision to break up Andhra Pradesh state and establish Telangana comes ahead of elections next year and critics say the ruling party is seeking to shore up its political fortunes after dragging its feet over the explosive issue for four decades.

Supporters, however, say Telangana's economic development has been neglected in favor of the richer and more powerful Andhra region, and that a new state is the only solution.

"It was not an easy decision, we appeal to people to cooperate," said Ajay Maken, a spokesman of the Congress after the party's highest decision-making body adopted a resolution calling for the establishment of a new state, igniting celebrations in parts of Andhra.

Additional federal troops were deployed ahead of the decision in the coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh where people are bitterly opposed to the breakup of the state.

The booming state capital Hyderabad, where Google, Microsoft and Dell have major sites, will remain the common capital for two states for a period of 10 years, Maken said.

Hyderabad, India's sixth largest city, was a bone of contention because it fell in the proposed new state carved out of the western part of Andhra Pradesh.

A government official said there was still a long way to go before the new state, which will have an estimated population of 40 million, became a reality. The measure has to be approved by the Andhra assembly and then the federal parliament where the Congress does not have a clear majority.

"We're swallowing the poison for our party. The decision is very unfortunate but since our leader has taken the decision we'll abide by it. We know the consequences, the problems that will follow," said Rudraraju Padma Raju, the chief whip of the Congress in the state, who has long opposed the split.

"DANGEROUS TREND"

One immediate consequence is likely to be renewed demands from other parts of India for separate states, including in the Darjeeling hills and a further breakup of the most populous Uttar Pradesh state.

Since independence in 1947, successive governments have dealt carefully with demands for new states - creating three in 2000 - while ensuring demands did not spiral enough to threaten the integrity of a nation that now has 1.2 billion people with hundreds of languages, ethnicities and castes.

India currently has 28 states while the United States with a population of 300 million has 50.

The chief minister of revolt-torn Jammu and Kashmir state said he feared the establishment of Telangana would set off more unrest.

"Telangana is a state that will be created on the basis of agitation. It's not created on the basis of any recommendation of a state reorganizing commission or something like that," said Omar Abdullah.

"I believe this is a dangerous trend because all we are doing is sending across a message that if you agitate enough, and if you agitate long enough, you will create a state."

Another fear is that leftist guerrillas who operate in parts of the proposed Telangana state will become further emboldened and take advantage as the new state comes into being.

Local SEO Best Practices in 2013 - Blogging Tips

Local SEO Best Practices in 2013

As algorithms continue to evolve and strive to provide users with the most relevant content possible, search engines have put more of an emphasis on localized search results. Consequently, it?s important for businesses in nearly all industries to adapt and optimize their websites accordingly. According to Google, ?97 percent of consumers search for local businesses online.? That?s why focusing on local SEO makes it possible to bring in highly targeted traffic and experience a favorable conversion rate. Here are some ways you can implement local SEO into your marketing campaign.

Google Places ?

Google local resultsFor starters, it?s sign up for Google Places to receive immediate exposure in your local area. This is quick and easy to do and will help your business connect with potential customers and clients through Google Search and Maps. Filling out your profile is straightforward and you will simply need to include some basic information like your company name, operating hours, contact information, etc. To maximize your impact, perform keyword research beforehand and incorporate quality keywords into your profile. Since visual content can be a natural attention grabber, it?s wise to include a few professional looking images as well.

Create a Business Page on Google+

A few years ago, Google+ had minimal leverage and seemed somewhat like a halfhearted attempt for Google to run their own social network. However, things have changed and Google+ has picked up a considerable amount of momentum in the social media stratosphere. While it doesn?t carry the same weight as Facebook and Twitter, establishing a presence for your business on this network can have definite advantages. According to Daily SEO Tip, ?when users who have a Google account, such as Gmail or Google+ search for services, Google has begun displaying Google+ business pages in addition to normal search results.?

This means that you have the potential to reach a considerable number of people by creating a simple business page. Unlike other networks that require a high volume of updates for success, it?s not really necessary on Google+. A simple update here and there should be sufficient and give your business a legitimate edge over local competitors without a page on this network. This in conjunction with a profile on Google Places can have a profound impact on your position in local search rankings.

?

Online Local Business Directories

While Google is usually your best bet for gaining local exposure, you shouldn?t forget about other business directories. These resources are designed to connect businesses with consumers who are seeking products and/or services in a certain location. Even if you don?t rank on the first page for the keywords you want, appearing on local business directories can give you access to the demographic you?re trying to reach. The best part is that most are free to sign up for and don?t require a major time investment. All you have to do is fill out some basic information like you would on Google Places. Here are some directories worth checking out:

Using Geographical Keywords

Whenever writing blog posts, articles or creating any type of content with keywords, throwing in some geographical terms should give you a local SEO boost. For instance, a pizza restaurant owner in Charlotte, NC might use keywords like ?pizza Charlotte? or ?pizza Mecklenburg County? rather than merely ?pizza restaurant? or ?Italian food? to capitalize on local searches.

To maximize the odds of success and reach the largest amount of consumers possible, it?s wise to include some surrounding areas as well. In this case, the restaurant owner might target nearby cities like Concord, Gastonia and Kannapolis, NC. Performing a quick online search of all the towns and cities within a 25 mile radius will give you an idea of which locations you should target.

Being conscious of your geographic location and including the appropriate keywords will help your business connect with consumers in your immediate area. This should reduce the amount of competition for keyword phrases and keep traffic highly targeted. If you run a brick and mortar business where you?re primarily selling to a demographic that?s limited to a certain radius, this is especially important.

KML Sitemap

This is one option that many people aren?t aware of, but can have major benefits for your local SEO campaign. According to Google Developers, ?a KML is a file format used to display geographic data in an Earth browser such as Google Earth, Google Maps, and Google Maps for mobile. KML uses a tag-based structure with nested elements and attributes and is based on the XML standard.? Once consumers can consistently find your business on these resources, it can help improve your traffic volume significantly.

Due to the fact that not everyone knows about this technique, you can expect to outrank many of the primary competitors in your local region. An easy way to transfer your business?s info to Google?s server is through a KML Generator. All it takes is filling out some brief information and downloading the appropriate file.

Being Mobile Friendly

The use of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets has skyrocketed in recent times. Consequently, more and more people are using their mobile devices to perform Internet searches. A study by Localeze and 15miles has found that 61 percent of mobile users ran local searches in 2012. While most marketers knew that a considerable number of people used mobile devices for general Internet searches, they might not have known just how many were specifically looking for local businesses.

If you think about it, it makes perfect sense that mobile and local searches are correlated. Just imagine how many tourists in a new city would pull out their smartphones to search for a restaurant, hotel and other destinations. Since this number is likely to continue to grow into the future, putting forth the effort to make your business?s website mobile friendly is a must. In order to do so, there are three main options to choose from:

  1. Create an alternate version of your website that?s specifically designed for mobile users.
  2. Utilize responsive web design (RWD) to create a single site that?s compatible with nearly all screen sizes. This allows consumers to browse a site through desktop PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones.
  3. Use a plugin like Uppsite that uses HTML5 to turn most sites into a web app for mobile devices.

Once you?ve taken the necessary steps to optimize from a mobile perspective, you can expect more traffic, a lower bounce rate and more conversions. When compared to competitors who are living in the past with sites only viewable on desktops and laptops, this gives your business a sizable advantage.

Creating Fresh Content

Finally, it?s helpful to continually churn out quality content to prevent your site from becoming static. Search engines naturally give preference to sites that are updated at least fairly frequently as opposed to those that sit and stagnate. For this reason, maintaining a blog and updating at least once a week can be very beneficial. Besides getting search engine love, this should keep your audience coming back to see what you?ve been up to. For maximum impact, it?s best to run your blog off of your primary URL instead of a separate one.

Israel, Palestinians launch new peace effort

Secretary of State John Kerry got the money shot he wanted on Tuesday -- the chief negotiators for Israel and the Palestinians framed by his lanky embrace as they shook hands to launch "sustained, continuous and substantive" talks on a long-sought Middle East peace treaty.

Now the question is whether the negotiations expected to last nine months will bring an even more historic image, with President Barack Obama bringing together Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to sign a final-status agreement that creates a sovereign Palestinian state in what is now part of Israel.

The Middle East dispute, perhaps the world's most intractable in the past six decades, entered a new phase with Kerry's announcement that the first direct talks in three years would proceed in earnest in the next two weeks in either Israel or the Palestinian territories.

Flanked by Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erakat, Kerry said "all core issues" toward achieving a two-state solution would be on the table.

"Our objective will be to achieve a final status agreement over the course of the next nine months," he said.

Acknowledging the obstacles from years of hostility and mistrust, Kerry said the process would be difficult but that he believed an agreement could be achieved.

"When somebody tells you that Israelis and Palestinians cannot find common ground or address the issues that divide them, don't believe them," Kerry said, adding: "While I understand the skepticism, I don't share it and I don't think we have time for it."

Major obstacles that date back decades in the Middle East conflict include established Jewish settlements in territory claimed by the Palestinians, the status of Palestinian refugees seeking to return to the region, and control of Jerusalem, particularly its Muslim holy sites.

Kerry has pushed to resume negotiations in order to stave off a showdown over the Israel-Palestinian question at the U.N. General Assembly in September.

His efforts, including multiple meetings in the region with each side in recent months, sought to assure the Israelis that their security concerns would be addressed while convincing Palestinians that an agreement was in their best long-term interest.

(AP) ? Penn State's ex-president and two former top school administrators were ordered Tuesday to stand trial on charges accusing them of a cover-up in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

Prosecutors showed enough evidence during a two-day preliminary hearing to warrant a trial for ex-President Graham Spanier, former vice president Gary Schultz and ex-athletic director Tim Curley, District Judge William Wenner concluded.

Wenner called it "a tragic day for Penn State University."

The men engaged in a "conspiracy of silence," the lead state prosecutor, Bruce Beemer, said during his closing argument. They covered up their failure to tell police about a 2001 allegation that Sandusky was molesting a boy in a university locker room shower, even after they were aware that police investigated complaints about Sandusky showering with boys in 1998, Beemer said.

The key testimony centered on a series of emails among the three defendants that discussed the 1998 and 2001 cases and the testimony of Mike McQueary, a former team assistant and quarterback who said he had immediately told Schultz, Curley and the late longtime football coach Joe Paterno that he had seen Sandusky molesting a boy in the shower in 2001.

Sandusky, a defensive coordinator under Paterno until his retirement in 1999, was convicted last year of 45 counts of child sexual abuse. He maintains his innocence and is appealing a 30- to 60-year state prison term.

Anthony Lubrano, a Penn State trustee who watched the two days of testimony, said he had not expected Wenner to throw out the case, given the low level of evidence necessary to send the case to trial. However, he said, "if you get an unbiased jury (at a trial), it'll be hard to get those charges to stick."

Spanier testified to a grand jury that he was unaware of the 1998 investigation while Curley and Schultz testified that McQueary reported only that Sandusky and the boy were engaged in naked, inappropriate horseplay that made him uncomfortable. Once the defendants became aware of an investigation into Sandusky in 2010 or 2011, they did nothing to stop it, obstruct it or hide evidence, their lawyers said.

"What was reported was not a report of any activity that was sexual in nature," Spanier told the grand jury in testimony read aloud in court Tuesday. "I know better than to jump to conclusions about things like that."

The three were charged with perjury, obstruction, endangering the welfare of children, failure to properly report suspected abuse and conspiracy. Those charges include allegations of hiding evidence from investigators and lying to the grand jury.

Penn State and the Paterno family declined to comment.

Curley and Schultz were initially charged in November 2011, when Sandusky was arrested, and accused of perjury and failure to properly report the incident.

Spanier was forced out as president at that time. A year later, he was charged with covering up a complaint about Sandusky while additional charges were filed against Curley and Schultz. Spanier remains a faculty member on administrative leave.

Paterno was fired and died in January 2012.

Saudi Prince Reveals Why Actor Matt Damon has Become a Tool of Oil Sheiks

A Saudi Arabian prince explains why oil sheiks funded Matt Damon?s anti-fracking movie flop Promised Land.

A Saudi prince has warned that his oil-reliant nation is under threat because of fracking technology being developed elsewhere around the world.

Billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal said the Gulf Arab kingdom needed to reduce its reliance on crude oil and diversify its revenues.

His warning comes as rising shale energy supplies in the United States cut global demand for Saudi oil.

In an open letter to his country?s oil minister Ali al Naimi and other government heads, published on Sunday via his Twitter account, Prince Alwaleed said demand for oil from Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) member states was ?in continuous decline?.

?

Prince Alwaleed, owner of international investment firm Kingdom Holding, is unusually outspoken for a top Saudi businessman.

But his warning reflects growing concern in private among many Saudis about the long-term impact of shale technology.

It is allowing the US and Canada to tap unconventional oil deposits which they could not reach just a few years ago.

Hydraulic fracking, which environmentalists oppose despite mounting evidence that it?s safe, is powering a US-Canadian energy boom.

Jennifer Lopez recently came under fire for performing concerts for brutal dictators in places like Turkmenistan.

What will Matt Damon?s fans make of him making what amounts to Middle Eastern oil propaganda?

The creators of Promised Land have gone to absurd lengths to vilify oil and gas companies, as Scribe?s Michael Sandoval noted Wednesday. Since recent events have demonstrated the relative environmental soundness of hydraulic fracturing ? a technique for extracting oil and gas from shale formations ? Promised Land?s script has been altered to make doom-saying environmentalists the tools of oil companies attempting to discredit legitimate ?fracking? concerns.

While left-leaning Hollywood often targets supposed environmental evildoers, Promised Land was also produced ?in association with? Image Media Abu Dhabi, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Media, according to the preview?s list of credits. A spokesperson with DDA Public Relations, which runs PR for Participant Media, the company that developed the film fund backing Promised Land, confirmed that AD Media is a financier. The company is wholly owned by the government of the UAE.

The question is, do these Hollywood types become propaganda tools out of ignorance, or just old-fashioned greed?

King Richard III of England: Dig unearths mysterious coffin-within-a-coffin

King Richard III of England was unearthed in a parking lot about a year ago. The Richard III site has now produced a new mystery: a lead coffin within a stone coffin. 'We still don't know who is inside,' says a researcher.

By Associated Press / July 29, 2013

Researchers reveal a stone coffin after its lid was removed, at the Greyfriars dig site. Archaeologists have discovered the mysterious coffin-within-a-coffin from the same Leicester parking lot where England's King Richard III was famously buried for 500 years. Experts returned to the site of the former Grey Friars Church at the beginning of July to learn more about the area, only to find a full intact stone casket with a lead coffin inside.

A team of archaeologists said Monday it has unearthed an unusual coffin-within-a-coffin in the central England parking lot where it found the skeleton of King?Richard?III of England, and that they hope to identify the remains within.

University of Leicester scientists have been digging at the Grey Friars site in Leicester after finding the body of King Richard III there in September. He died nearby in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth Field.

The team said it had discovered a fully intact medieval stone coffin during a dig in September but wasn't able to investigate it further at the time. When it was opened this week, the team said, it found a lead coffin within it, one likely to contain a "high status" individual.

Scientists think the lead coffin ? which has a hole through which the deceased's feet can be seen ? could contain one of the friary's founders, a medieval monk, or the remains of a 14th-century medieval knight, Sir William Moton.

The archaeologists say that tests must be carried out to determine how to open the lead coffin without damaging the remains.

The University of Leicester's Matthew Morris said no one on the team had ever seen a lead coffin within a stone coffin before.

"It was as exciting as finding?Richard?III," he said in a statement. "We still don't know who is inside ? so there is still a question mark over it."

Apple report: Chinese workers unhappy as they assemble your cheaper iPhone

Bloomberg

A report by nonprofit China Labor Watch said Apple's supplier Pegatron is working employees long hours for little pay.

Shana Lynch, Managing Editor, Silicon Valley Business Journal

A report out today by New York-based nonprofit China Labor Watch looked into the working conditions of Apple?s Chinese supplier, Pegatron.

It revealed two pieces of news, one intentionally and one probably less so.

First, the report highlighted Pegatron?s less-than-desirable working conditions at three different factories in China. As in, 11-hour days, six days a week, making about $1.50 an hour. It?s kind of a black eye considering Apple made a big fanfare of investigating its supply chain to improve working conditions.

Both Apple and Pegatron said they would investigate the allegations.

The other revealing detail on the report? Employees working those ridiculous hours are currently building that rumored cheaper iPhone. The report references the new iPhone throughout (well, and the title is ?Apple?s unkept promises: Cheap iPhones come at high costs to Chinese workers?). It also mentioned the low-priced phone is plastic and will soon be released on the market. (Venturebeat does a nice job pulling out all those references here.)

This is a special room. Report from ABC news. I'm -- pepperoni or -- ABC news digital special report reunited. And it feels. So mysterious. For now we at least. Former secretary of states and First Lady Hillary Clinton you -- making her way in there. She was dining with 2008 primary rival turned boss President Obama White House today. A private lunch no word on. How it came together and what they were discussing Clinton of course an early front runner in the 2016 democratic presidential nomination so there is plenty of speculation to be done. -- -- a separate fact from fiction is ABC's political director Rick -- Rick thanks for being with us today. I damn bit of excitement down there -- DCI -- for the moment though. A lot of put aside what they did or did not potentially discussed at today's -- a lot of folks in the political theatrics here we're discussing -- the photos are out there are so what exactly does this mean then for projection of the public. We'll keep in mind that they started out as friends -- it became rivals and then it became allies and now there's something different tire related gone their separate paths however. Those -- could converge again because -- -- the very real potential that Hillary Clinton is gonna wanna be Barack Obama's successor. That is a little thing called Joseph Biden that's part of this and it's telling that Joseph Biden not part of this lunch but every -- -- Hillary Clinton will do anything in public and certainly when she does something -- the White House it is going to -- when he sixteen speculation keep in mind that interview that they did late last year President Obama and Secretary Clinton. Appearing together on sixty minutes -- kind of valedictory. Farewell into lines are private sector life and and -- thank you for a job -- and present mama's mind was -- on. These are the important that kind of optics around this that that I think you're gonna figure very much and the people calculating now around 2016 you could say it's the world 126 seem to keep in mind. Almost nothing can happen around the presidential race until Hillary Clinton act she is the 800 pound gorilla in this race and what she does matters very very much. And Christine our -- you've paid for the relationship as it's developed over the years between those two. Is far is going beyond the voting public which may may or may not be paying close attention -- this what does a signal into the donors. Opt for the ready for Hillary -- supporters. The very -- -- -- for -- democratic donors that Hillary Clinton hasn't made up her mind keep your powder dry is what they have been told and in just about as many words but people supporting. Hillary Clinton that you mentioned -- ready for Hillary -- now this is an outside. Group that doesn't have any formal affiliation with Hillary Clinton but it -- in gaining momentum it has been gaining support. Over the last couple of months we're going to see their first filing with the Federal Election Commission this week actually we'll get a sense of how many names they've gathered how much money. They have that piled up in the in the first couple months of their existence and it has become a campaign in waiting there are bigger and bolder democratic names that are involved in this effort it started out as some some junior former aides in the 2008 campaign -- -- since then we've seen. James Carville -- -- -- senator Claire McCaskill governor Jennifer Granholm among others. When their names this effort it has gained in momentum and is -- and there's a very clear sense in the political world right now. That this is the grassroots army that Hillary Clinton will have waiting for her if and when she decides to run. That's the bigger picture but -- running back to the fun stuff now what do you think. Might have been discussed at today's mean after talking about the families and the weather and -- vacations -- -- over the summertime. Let me start with -- I doubt they even talk about 2016 that's what we want to talk about I can't imagine. It coming up in a forum like this. My guess in the in the meeting hasn't come hasn't come to much of -- conclusion yes that we don't have a readout from the White House my guess is that they discussed foreign policy I have to imagine they talked about. What's going on -- just this week in Egypt may be about about what's going on in mideast peace talks secretary Carey's role in taking over the -- for Secretary Clinton. My guess is they caught talk shop quite a -- these are a couple walks and there are certainly big issues. Out there are and -- and as you say lots of personal things involved -- that as well you have to imagine you're talking about how how much he's enjoying. Getting up late sleeping in and not getting paid hefty sums to give speeches this year. She certainly talked about that I don't -- a lot of people's attention moment as you know came out over the weekend as far as what the schedule was for the president today. You think we should expect more these launch dates. Are dates just any of these kind of appearances at the White House -- future if they're -- to talking about shop. I would expect. It will happen from time to time they've they've been a handful of meetings since she left office there was a dinner with the President Clinton as -- Secretary Clinton at the White House attended by the Obama's. They met of course it did the bush library opening back in April so that they'll continue to share the same space of the shares in the -- state state. They have a lot of mutual aids involves a lot of the former Obama campaign folks are beginning to enlist with some of the early Hillary Clinton efforts so there's a lot of overlap. And as I mentioned -- it couldn't escape my notice the fact that Vice President Biden is in Washington today with quote no public events scheduled it was almost like a signal from the vice president's office at eight. I cannot -- still. If you look maybe he disaster by someone else that's not -- gain as much attention. As former secretary of state and four First Lady. I have to ask you about this any noise out of the Clinton land camp that the latest developments in the Anthony Weiner saga might be having an impact on -- -- at least. As it relates to. -- -- dean his wife -- -- that is of course. Clinton's trusted friends and aides are hurt. Yet it is a growing concern in the Clinton world about the spillover effect. Donors who were enlisted by whom -- to its to go on -- the -- campaign dismayed by what they're seeing right now the fact that she's standing by him. We're seeing a a little bit of public pressure beginning. From big name Democrats Dee Myers the former Clinton Press Secretary David Axelrod the Obama advisor among those now saying it's time for Weiner to go. So I think there's some -- around the edges a lot of concern. In the Clinton world about being tarnished by this -- format it -- saw the lesson these lessons and Hillary Clinton they were the wrong lessons in their view. I don't get a sense that there about it to weigh in publicly I think the clintons -- keep as much of their. Their own brand out of this mess as they possibly can but I've been assured by multiple people who. -- close of the clintons that they would very much like to see this come to a conclusion they would not mind that all -- Anthony Weiner leave. Their preferences this happened cleanly and quickly Anthony -- asked about that on the campaign trail says he's not listening to any other politicians he's not listening to Sunday Talking Heads he's running his own campaign. And of course big is the Clinton plan the Clinton camp would like to talk about the fact that it's -- I was at the White House breaking -- this afternoon. That's exactly right it's on and -- -- the position that -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Perhaps less important than the simple fact of seeing Clinton at 16100 Pennsylvania Avenue. India becomes largest overseas tourist market for Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, UAE - Indian and Russian guests are the new toast of the capital.

While domestic tourists still form the biggest pool of clients for the emirate, India is the largest overseas market for Abu Dhabi.

India toppled the United Kingdom, which was the largest market in first half of 2012. More than 80,000 Indian guests stayed in Abu Dhabi's hotels in the first half of the year, a 22 per cent rise on the same period last year.

They stayed an average of 4.17 nights. More than 78,000 Britons stayed in the emirate's hotels from January to June, followed by Germany with 62,000 guests.

In the first half of the year, Russians stayed the longest in the emirate's hotels, checking in for about six nights, a 6 per cent increase over the same period last year.

The number of visitors from Russia was, however, smaller than those from Germany and the United Kingdom with a little more than 13,000.

"We are benefiting from increased destination awareness in India following the opening a year ago of a dedicated promotions office there and also of increased air access from the country following Etihad Airways' equity stake in Jet Airways and the move by the Indian carrier of its Middle East hub to Abu Dhabi," said Mubarak Al Muhairi, the director general of Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA) Abu Dhabi, which yesterday released data for the first half of the year.

Air traffic from Abu Dhabi airport to India grew by 18 per cent between January and June this year over the same period last year, Abu Dhabi Airports Company (Adac) said yesterday. It was followed by traffic to Saudi Arabia, Germany, Thailand and the UK.

For the Thai hotel group Anantara Hotels, Resorts and Spas, which has four properties in Abu Dhabi, the Russian and Indian markets remain potential growth areas.

"We are aiming for a pickup in growth towards the end of summer, which should be in response to all our public relations and sales efforts," said Nancy Nusrally, the area public relations manager of the hotel group in Abu Dhabi.

"With the recent launch on Sir Bani Yas Island, we are aiming for greater response from the Russian market who are known to target beach resorts."

The top source markets for the chain in Abu Dhabi remain the domestic market, Germany, the UK, France, Australia and Holland.

Overall, the emirate recorded an increase of 12 per cent in the number of guests staying in its 145 hotels and hotel apartments for the first half of this year compared to the same period last year.

Abu Dhabi also announced plans to meet growing demand from cruise ship passengers.

South Florida's Nigerian community is planning to build a museum highlighting its African culture.

The Nigerian American Foundation expects to spend up to $6 million to build the museum by 2018 on land owned by Miami-Dade County. The foundation will pay $1 per year for the lease.

The museum will contain a lecture hall and a performing arts center.

More than 1,000 Nigerians live in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

The chairman of the Nigerian American Foundation said the community is "trying to leave some type of legacy for our kids."

"Since we are here, we might as well bloom where we are planted," Joseph Obadeyi said.

Paulsen, others want India to stop ignoring U.S. drug patents

?

? Minnesota Rep. Erik Paulsen and several other House members met earlier this month with India?s finance minister to deliver a strong message: Stop ?messing with other countries? intellectual property.

Paulsen, a Republican, specifically called out India for refusing to honor a patent for the cancer drug Nexavar produced by Bayer, a multinational company that employs hundreds of workers in Minnesota. In March, Indian authorities upheld a government-ordered ?compulsory license? that let an Indian company produce and sell a generic version of Nexavar without Bayer?s permission.

It was the first time India had issued a compulsory license, which aims to make an expensive Western drug available at affordable cost. Paulsen called it ?the blatant theft of intellectual property.?

The congressman and other ?critics within U.S. political and business communities fear that India?s trade rules signal a trend that will hurt American companies that want to expand in one of the world?s most profitable emerging markets.

?This sets the standard for other countries, and other countries are considering similar measures,? Paulsen said of India?s actions. In addition to the compulsory license, Paulsen said India ?has revoked patents for other drugs? and required domestic production of other products.

Supporters say the rules are necessary to make lifesaving technology affordable. ?It?s not an anti-patent movement,? patent lawyer Subhatosh Majumdar told the Star Tribune in a telephone interview from India. ?It?s about access to drugs for poor people in the Third World.?

Only about 15 percent of the Indian population has health insurance to pay for expensive drugs or medical devices, Majumdar explained. ?The rest must pay by selling property, begging, borrowing or stealing.?

The financial stakes are huge, given India?s 1.27 billion population and growing middle class. One recent estimate predicted that the Indian middle class will grow from 5 percent of the country?s population in 2007 to 40 percent by 2027. With increased wealth comes buying power.

Government data show that trade between the United States and India grew from $5.6 billion in 1990 to $62.9 billion in 2012. Minnesota exported $40 million in manufactured and non-manufactured goods to India in 2001, and by 2012 the amount had increased to $203 million.

Over Bayer?s protests, India allowed marketing of a generic $175-per-month version of Nexavar, destroying what Bayer hoped would be an exclusive, lucrative market for a patent-protected brand name ?product it sold for $5,500 a month. In exchange, Indian officials ordered the generic drugmaker to pay Bayer a licensing fee that amounted to a fraction of what Bayer expected to earn.
