Devin Labuda, 21, was charged Monday in 19th District Court with unlawful entry.
?A person who would steal from a church would steal from anyone,? Police Chief Ronald Haddad said in a press release. ?I?m pleased that our officer was able to spot this suspect, arrest him and return the chalice to the church.?
An officer on patrol saw Labuda, who apparently was intoxicated, approaching customers at the gas pumps at BP, 22096 Michigan Ave. at Mason, at about 10:30 p.m. He had the chalice.
The officer determined that Labuda allegedly entered the unlocked First Baptist Church, 1865 Nowlin, and stole the chalice, which was returned to the pastor.
