Mexico detains 2 soldiers for alleged kidnapping (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? The Mexican army says it has detained two of its soldiers in connection with the kidnapping of an underage girl and that they will be discharged to face the charges in a civilian court.

The Army's Fifth Military Zone in northern Chihuahua state says in a statement that the two had about two years' service each. It did not say when or where the kidnapping occurred.

The statement issued Monday said the army "will not cover up for any member of the armed forces who commits a crime."

The statement noted that the soldiers were detained Saturday and that a third suspect still at large is a civilian.

In July, Mexico's supreme court said military violations of citizens' civil rights should be tried in civilian courts, but stopped short of requiring it.
